ios7 keeps refreshing apps after switching

I dont know if this is a new "feature", but it's really annoying.

If i have, say, an open webpage in Safari, and say i've scrolled down the page and zoomed in to a section i'm interested in, then switch to Mail to get some info, and then switch back to the webpage, the webpage will refresh and take me back to the top.

It's REALLY annoying.

Why can't it just stay where it was, like in ios6??

Is anyone else having this issue? Can anyone think of a fix?

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.2

Just adding my issues here in hopes it gets attention from the powers that be

My Experience is as follows

Games - take your focus off the game and come back later and you have been refreshed out of a life and progress on current level. (I'll admit to playing Candy Crush when I have 5 idle minutes here and there )

Forms - Leave to get info on another page or app and come back to find your form emptied of previous entries.

Downloading Apps . take the focus off the app and it does not download in background as it did previously. Refocus to apps and page is refreshed to home page.

Facebook - since this is always on in background you may take a call, do work, etc and come back and now have refreshed what you left off with.

It is quite irritating and can not be called advantageous to the end user experience in any way. Maybe this frees up memory and makes the phone faster but at what cost?

I took my iPad 2 (64GB wifi) into the Apple Store in Bristol this morning for an appointment at the Genius Bar. Fortunately I was able to demonstrate the problem to the Genius (wish they'd use another word) using Safari and iBooks. I had been catching up with the news then switched back to iBooks. The book promptly closed and reopened - the usual thing.

Unsurprisingly, he'd not come across this problem before. His best suggestion was to do a DFU restore which I believe restores the firmware before installing iOS. This does of course mean losing all apps and data. After some debate (I had backed up the iPad yesterday evening), I decided to take one for the team and we went ahead and did the restore.

I now have a pristine new iPad with a bare minimum of apps. I downloaded iBooks and restored a book then used Safari for a bit then went back to iBooks. The same problem ... it was all for nothing.

BTW, I was having a coffee in a cafe just before the Apple Store appointment and when I swapped to iBooks there was no close/refresh behaviour, i.e. this is not purely a time dependent issue as the iBooks had been pushed to background over an hour previously. Only once I was in the store with a wifi signal and used Safari for a while did the problem reoccur. Could Safari be the common link? Is anyone having this problem who does not use Safari?

The Genius did take down all the details and logged it as a support issue with Apple and advised me to do the same if the DFU restore did not solve the problem. I might suggest all of you do the same.

So, even the most extreme reset failed to solve the problem. We are still none the wiser. I just hope my app and data restore goes OK ...

I don't think Apple ever look at these forums unfortunately - they just leave us users to try to figure solutions to issues out ourselves!

I've tried Battery Doctor myself, which consistently says I've got low memory, but I'm not convinced about it's facility to 'reallocate' memory - I've been investigating how iOS's memory management works, and assume that Battery Doctor just gets iOS to issue 'free up memory now' notifications to all suspended apps - just what the system does automatically when memory actually does run out completely.

I've managed to run Instruments on a Mac and compare my iPhone 4 running iOS 7.0.3 and compare it to an iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1.4. On both phones, I closed all apps, did a hard reset, then let the phone settle for a couple of minutes after restarting. The memory status was as follows:

iPhone 5, 6.1.4:

Wired 87.77

Active 104.48

Inactive 15.29

Used 207.32

Free 763.08

iPhone 4, 7.0.3:

Wired 71.63

Active 99.67

Inactive 81.00

Used 252.30

Free 140.86

Inactive memory is described as 'recently released', so I think you can essentially remove this from the Used figure. The Active figures aren't too dissimilar, which points against my theory of iOS 7 taking up more RAM. What is strange is that the Used and Free figures for the iPhone 4 only add up to 393.16 - I seem to have lost about 100KB somewhere! I'll investigate futher when I get chance...

Thought you might like to know that the recover-from-backup to my 64GB iPad 2 was a success. I share this simply because it's hopefully not a procedure many of us will often have to follow.

The recovery took about 6 hours and although successful, about a dozen apps were still missing from my iPad so I had to restore them from iCloud. Encouragingly, the associated data was also recovered.

The one puzzle was that I was faced with over 200 app updates after the restore even though I had backed up my iPad the day before the restore. Why older backed-up versions had not been overwritten by the most recent backup is a mystery as is that of the missing dozen or so apps.

So while the recovery process was not without its quirks, the end result is that I'm reasonably sure I haven't lost anything though I do appear to have gained nearly 10GB of space. While that should ring alarm bells, I have had to reinstall iMovie before as it had become heavily bloated even after deleting all data. Perhaps there are other apps that have similar bloat problems. But 10GB seems a lot even if I cannot see any losses - yet. However, any important data is just a mirror of that stored on other machines or is synced to Dropbox.

I hope this is not too off-topic but the recovery did arise out of an attempted solution to the original problem.

I did nothing special other than the DFU reset I mentioned earlier. This pretty much gave me an out-of-the-box iPad. I did not wipe it clean. When I connected to my laptop, iTunes recognised it as a 'new' iPad but offered me the restore option in the device's sync page as you described. So yes, the qualified success of the restore (plus all the follow-up updates) was encouraging but not something I'd want to do or rely on too often!

Add my name to the list of people having this issue. I agree. Very annoying. I have an iPhone 4S and third gen iPad. I notice it on both devices, which run 7.0.3. I didn't notice this issue in ios6, but did after upgrading to 7. I do a lot of app switching, so very frustrating for me.

Can anyone reproduce this issue with an iPhone 5 or 5c/s? My 4s has been slow after the upgrade, so have been thinking about just upgrading to a 5s.

After reading through this thread, I think the available memory may be the issue.

Hi all

Sorry to burst the bubble about the memory limit of the ipad 2 but my ipad air does the same, safari keeps refreshing tabs and it's a pain.

I also have a ipad 2 with iOS 6 on it and I have no problems with safari refreshing tabs and I have the same apps open on the ipad 2 as I have on the ipad air and the same 10 tabs. The ipad 2 is fine the ipad air keeps refreshing the tabs.

I decided to upgrade my ipad 2 to iOS 7 and guess what now that does the same as the ipad air.

This is a iOS 7 problem not a memory problem. When I got my ipad air I started from a fresh device so that was not the problem, it seems that iOS 7 keeps refreshing the tabs for no reason. Like I said I had the same tabs open on the ipad 2 on iOS 6 with no problems and now on iOS 7 it does what the ipad air does keeps refreshing the tabs.

Has anyone contact apple about this or have they responded to this post as it's getting to me.

Cheers all

Hi Merid, well this adds a new perspective to things. You seem to be describing the intra-app problem described by babsonnexus. Are you also seeing the inter-app refresh problem? Perhaps we were blaming 512MB iThings simply because they are still in the majority. Knowing Apple, I wouldn't expect a response to this thread or any acknowledgment of the problem.

The Apple Store did fill in a support issue on my behalf when I visited them this week (see an earlier post) but the more of us that do so the better.

I've lost track a bit now. Is there anyone out there with a 1GB RAM iPhone or iPad who is *not* seeing this problem? I.e. is it universal but just too obscure to be easily described and/or searched for?

As a long time Apple fan, my faith was shaken my the numerous iOS 6 problems. It has been further dented by iOS 7 niggles and glitches. Apple products used to just work.

Hi everyone,

original OP here.

So, this started out with me using an iPhone 4s... I've recently upgraded to the 5c, and.... drumroll.....

no fix 😟

I actually quite like the feature when it applies to Facebook, but when reading a book or webrowsing, it's a complete PITA.

Doesn't look like Apple is acknowledging this as a problem... but it effectively means their mulitasking system is useless.
