Good God people, you're talking to users who have owned iPhones since they first came out. Please stop posting responses that describe the basic remedial functions like how to perform a screen capture. Let me spell this out. This function has stopped working on several users devices, including mine. I don't need someone to tell me how to do this, I need to know why it NO LONGER WORKS.

As the procedure hasn't changed (and no, not everyone who has had an iPhone since the first came out knows how to take a screen shot), then you most likely have a hardware problem. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store.

Actually old chap the screenshot function requires a little bit more finesse in iOS7 than in previous operating systems. Just wanted to be sure you weren't mashing buttons like a frustrated gorilla, but as you're clearly an old hand I'm going to agree that you probably have a dud device and need to go visit your fellow genii.

Maybe you've run out of storage space on your iPhone? Did you know that you have to have a certain amount of available storage in order to take a picture, and that includes screenshots?

Oh good call. That wouldn't indeed account for "disappearing" functionality.
