My imessages was turned off in my phone to avoid an AppleID account clash with my daughter. Some texts got through to me from friends but some didn't. That was the puzzle. To solve this your contacts need to follow advice above from brasil428 i.e. go into settings/messages and allow sms when imessages not available. :-)

I think this will also be the problem for people who are sending messages - your phone needs to allow sms as well as imessage or the result will be missing/unsent messages.....

Found this on another forum (it gets rid of the stuck bloop at the top with 1 message unread as well as it might help with the unsent messages)!

Hold down the lock button until it has the "slide to power off" icon, then hold down the home button until all the apps quit and restart and it got rid of my bloop of 7 messages (and may help you too)!

TRY IT. SEE IF IT WORKS.

Okay, I am back. It has been well over a week since my friend's issue has occurred and it seemed to fix her issue just like this. First go to settings and click on iCloud.User uploaded file once you do that, you will see your apple ID and then where you can be reached by iMessage. If you are using the same Apple ID for your phone and iTouch or iPad, this is what you need to do. (I will not post the screenshot I took of this step because I like to keep my information private).

On your phone, make sure the part where 'YOU CAN BE REACHED BY IMESSAGE AT' is checked next to your phone number only. Then go to your iTouch or iPad and only place a check next to just the e-mail address and deselect your phone number.

I hope this works for you. I know it has been working for my friend for over a week now. Give it a try!

My issue is related I think. I recently switched from my iPhone4 (with iOS7) to a droid phone, Whenever my friends who still have iPhones message me, the message comes to my de-activated iPhone ⚠ instead of my droid. I switched off iMessages on the iPhone, hoping that would work. After receiving no messages at all from these people, I turned iMessage back on, and , of course, since my phone is now de-activated, so was iMessage. It would not turn back on. (Does anybody smell a passive-aggressive "software glitch" driven attack on non-Apple sers?)

The question is, do I have to ask all my iPhone friends to go through some sort of reset in order to be able to text their non-iPhone friends?

This is bizarre.
