I had the exact same problem as well. This is a known bug in the Apple software which can be fixed by restoring your phone to factory settings, then restoring any backed up data.
If the bug returns when data back up is restored:
- You will need to back up to iCloud,
- Restore the phone back to factory setting again
- Set up ohone as 'new phone' wihtout restoring back up
- Turn iMessage on & confirm it works
- Restore data from iCloud backup
I had tried many things including the above. (Except can't move on to step 5 as iMessage never works)
Even with the phone restored to a completely fresh new state. Using default settings (whatever it maybe) / using just the phone number / or a newly created apple id (maybe my old one was the issue - nope).... no luck.
If I send to an iphone phone number it sends as a text message doesnt matter if they are in my contacts or not.
If I send to an apple id it sends as an MMS message. If I turn off MMS messaging off it says that,
"the person I am trying to send the message to is unable to recieve imessages at this time".
Even though I can pick that phone up and send message back and forth with another friend via imessages.
That phone I can pick up is using a different apple id and is on the same wifi network. So that isnt the issue.
If I send a message from the working phone to my phone it sends as an iMessage and says that it was delievered....but...I never get the message on my phone as either an iMessage or text message.
While I ultimately don't care if I have iMessages or not...but I am not able to recieve any messages from anyone that uses iMessages as their main form of messaging as their phone thinks it works and doesnt attempt to send it via text. And I never get it.
I am baffled - I have litterally tried everything I can think of and still no use.
