Why is genre showing all genres for an artist instead of the selected genre?

I posted this under itunes match but there doesn't seem to be a fit there. Trying here.

I have a new iphone 5s and I've had itunes in the cloud/match since it started. Used an iphone before with no problem doing what I describe below.

I have many artists who, for example, may have christmas CDs or religious CDs in addition to their normal genre. Itunes may label all of them something like "country" by default but I have manually changed them to "christmas" so the tracks would not be mixed in with the "usual" genre.

For example, I may have religious and country themes on my iphone but I could go to genre, filter to country, play the artist and the "religious" genre would not show up. Now, even though I have the genre labeled as desired in itunes, all the CDs show up in the iphone when I go to genre for that artists. It doesn't really seem to filter by genre.

Is this because of how itunes has it labeled for genre?

I don't have itunes match even turned on for this iphone b/c of the hassles I've run into. I am not showing all music. I sync the music by direct connection to itunes by usb.

Any ideas? Anyone else encountered this issue?

Thanks.

I've just noticed this problem on my Iphone! Haven't noticed before because most of my artists are one-genre. But now I'm adding my Christmas music for the season, and I had a lot of albums for "Various Artists".

I can go to my Christmas genre, choose 'Various Artists' and all of the music for that 'artist' shows there. Like this screenshot, the first album showing is Christmas, the other two are Soundtrack.

Allayna: Thanks for the response and the pic. That's exactly my problem.

Apple had elevated to me, set a password so they could access my icloud, after a week they got back in touch with me and basically told me they couldn't figure it out, agree with my problem, and they are researching it as part of a larger problem not specific to me.

Someone on another discussion mentioned downloading "groove." I've been playing around with that and I'm still not sure it has solved the problem but I think it does. Nothing I've tried fixes this in the iphones native music app.

I just added my Christmas music to my iPhone yesterday and I have this exact same issue! It's frustrating because want to only listen to Christmas music now. I normally listen to Christian music, but now I only want to listen to my Christmas music genre! Clayton...have you received a response/answer to this? Last christmas/iTunes version I did not have this problem. It seems like it would be an easy fix

I am having the exact same problem. There are several artists whose albums are normally tagged in one genre (say, "Rock"), but who also happen to have Christmas albums that are tagged as being in the "Christmas" genre. In iTunes on my iMac, the albums are separately listed in each genre -- so I can browse the "Christmas" genre and see only albums with that tag even if a particular artist may also have an album tagged with another genre. But on my iPad, ALL of the artist's albums are listed in both genres, making browsing by genre essentially useless. Yet that's exactly what I want to do when I want to hear only Christmas music

Why is this happening? Why is it being ignored? It is really, really irritating -- especially at this time of year. When I want to browse "Christmas," I want to see ONLY albums so tagged, not every album by every artist who happens to have a Christmas album.

This is the kind of thing that makes me despise iTunes and Apple's control freakishness. If anyone figures out a way to fix this, PLEASE let us know.

guys - this is a known problem at Apple and started happening with the upgrade to ios 7. Genre is pretty much meaningly in my opinion now - the result you get when drilling from genre to artist are all the artist albums regardless of genre. That is the same result you get by just drilling down from artist.

The apple store and support people all know this (the ones who understand how the music player works). The issue is whether anything is going to change. Turns out, my cousin's son is one of the top executive in Apple (I can't say what his position currently is). I emailed him earlier tonight to see if he could help and his reponse was: "Already tried to fix. This was an intentional change". I am not exactly sure what this means so I have asked for a bit more clarification.

Meanwhile, almost every third party app music player I have tried that hooked into the music data store (i.e., uses the same music the apple player users), intentionally follows Apple's behavior and has the same problem except one - Ecoute. Now this app in version 1 actually drills down the correct way and shows only albums of the genre chosen. Unfortunately, last week they updated to version 2 and changed it to match Apple. I had a conversation with them and they told me they will putting that behavior back in their next release in the first week of Jan. Ecoute has been my primary player for ios 7 as up to last week, did the genre drill down correctly.

If you are aware of another third party player, I would love to know what the other options are. I am not interested in one designed to download music or one which requires I reorganize my music on the iphone into folders, etc.

well, based on some of my own research and some suggestions in this forum, I have located two 3rd party applications which can more than substitute for the Apple play and do the genre drilldown correctly.

If you want an app that has the same look and feel as the ios 6 music player with a couple of more features added, check out "Lagu". It is currently my preferred player.

If you want an app with some extra sophistication with arguably a better users interface and a better set of gestures, check out: "Ecoute".

Both these apps use the exact same music data base as the native Apple music app.

I have given up on the Apple music player - for one or both of these inexpensive apps, it is not worth spending my time waiting for Apple to fix anything.

I agree. I am done. This screwup is inexcusable and that it hasn't been fixed yet shows either incompetence or contempt for users. Ecoute is OK. I'll check out Lagu and any others that work correctly.
