IOS7 iPhone emails disappearing, are not delivered

Ever since I upgraded to IOS7 on my iPhone 4, I cannot send email. After I write the email and send it, it disappears. It does not show up in sent mail, and the intended recipient does not receive it. This happens on gmail, yahoo and aol accounts. I can send and receive email just fine on my PC laptop. But no longer on my IOS7 iPhone. Occasionally the iPhone email is delivered hours later, but that is rare. I have "rebooted" my iPhone, with no effect. Can I fix this? Is it my iPhone or is it IOS7? Can/will Apple fix this? Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know what I can do?

I am also having the same issue. On iPhone 4s on iOS 7.0.4.

I had 2 Gmail accounts, hotmail account and an ActiveSynch work account.

I have recently been turning the ActiveSynch work email off at the weekends.

It must be the iphone & not the email config - I can't see 4 different email accounts do the same thing! Also noticed that battery drains very quickly (sometimes it says its 20% charged but then dies when I take photos.

Emails sent from all accounts vanished and appeared as if sent. Nothing showed in Sent items, outbox on any accounts. I can receive email without issue and anything sent from Outlook in the office shows in my sent items on my work email.

Below is what I have tried so far:

  • Checked Passwords on iPhone (even though I hadn't changed any)
  • Restarted iPhone - Failed
  • Deleted the ActiveSynch profile and also deleted all email accounts & restarted phone
  • Set up one Gmail account, verified all credentials fine (all ticks) all mail in inbox and sent downloaded (except for any missing emails!)
  • Sent a new message but now get the message 'Cannot Send Mail'. The connection to the outgoing server "smtp.gmail.com" failed. Additional Outgoing Mail Servers can be configured in Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Email now shows in the Outbox as not sent at least now.
  • Go to the Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars area and click on the email account. Mail and Contacts are turned on (I dont synch Calendars and notes), I click on the account and click on the outgoing SMTP server. The host name of the Primary Server is Gmail SMTP Server, using port 465. It's all greyed out so I can't make any changes.
  • I went in to all the servers and deleted these leaving just the primary SMTP server and one other smtp.gmail.com server (the others had addresses linked to the other accounts I use.
  • tested sending an email...stuck in outbox.
  • Reset All Settings
  • It sent the old test...
  • created a new test email....failed stuck in outbox.
  • After about 30 minutes of not doing anything else but send test emails, one appears in my sent items on phone now but hasn't arrived on my work email address on PC, the 2nd test sent successfully and then appeared in my work email on PC (still no sign of the earlier one)
  • I send an email from my gmail on iphone to my gmail (same account) - get the Cannot Send Mail error!
  • Send an email from my gmail on iphone to my work seeing as this worked before.... get the error.

I use this for work email and we also have some iPhone users at our law firm so I'm concerned this affects more people who haven't yet noticed it! Personally I have 8 days left until I get a upgrade...

Others have already noted this, but I have isolated my problem with the "disappearing" sent emails to whether or not my other exchange account for work is on or off.

Someone had put in a link for a youtube video with a SMTP fix...it doesn't work. The guy says the problem is not happening with Gmail, which isn't true. I'm having the issue with Gmail and those settings are greyed out.

So to recap...as long as my work email is on, I'm good to send from my personal gmail. When I turn it off, suddenly no outgoing emails can send. Pain in rear. Never had that issue before iOS7...and yes I have the latest update.

I have deleted the account and added it back again. Problem persists...it's all about whether that exchange account is on. Strange.

If anyone hears of a real fix, I'd love to hear it.

A few weeks ago I noticed that though the application was showing say 2 unread emails on the home page, when I clicked into the Mail app I couldn't see any of them. This seemed to solve about a week ago after an automated upgrade but now the same problem is back. It is a Yahoo account and I have done all the deleting and re-adding and rebooting the phone and every other suggestion I can see here and nothing is working.

Thankfully this is not a business account but I have had some important emails through and cannot access them which is both frustrating and annoying as I don't want to be accessing my personal account at work.

Come on Apple, I sing your praises all the time, sort this out!!!

Just adding another disappointed user to this long list :-(

Again, many emails sent from my iPhone simply not getting through and just vanishing without trace. I'm fairly confident this is an iOS 7 issue as I've witnessed this on my 4S and now on my 5s, hopefully proving it's not a hardware issue. All my accounts are with icloud, so I can rule out Exchange servers and third party email services in my case. I have no trouble receiving emails, and better luck replying to those emails than sending new ones.

If I send myself an email (from one account to another) on my Mac, I receive it immediately. If I do that on my iPhone, about 1 in 5 gets through but even then it may take up to 30 minutes to do so.

As others have stated, only the ones that actually do get through show up in the Sent folder while there's no record of the others anywhere, even though This has proved very embarrassing when I'm running late for an appointment and I've emailed ahead my status, only to discover that important message didn't get through and then I can't prove my good intent anyway!

I've filled out the Feedback Form, but I hope this gets acknowledged and fixed soon, as we are all looking like fools at the moment while Apple has its fingers in its ears going "La la la la la la la laaaaa.... Sorry, but I didn't get your email about this?"

I had this and the following resolved the issue:

Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Accounts > Your Account > Outgoing Mail Server. Click on SMTP > Primary Server. Click on your smtp server > Outgoing Mail Server. Turn Server On, enter your mail User Name & Password, click on Authentication, tick Password, check Server Port is correct, then go to top left & click Done. Hopefully your mail will now send...

Unfortunately the number of issues in this area have become more than we can bear. Against our wishes we have to migrate. Apple is quick to blame the ISP and others. The support has been less than satisfactory and even rude on some occasions. I am not sure what their big plan is but they are going to have to go it without us. It is sad because for so many years and thousands of dollars in equipment we have been very satisfied. But in the end we have a business to run. Good luck to all of you.

This is bizarre!! I have had the same problem

And think I'm losing my mind

I have an engineer looking into

It's happened to me 3 times in the last

Month. One time it was one night

The other an entire weekend of emails gone

And I thought the recipients got all

Them. Last night 2 very important

Emails.

- hear swoosh sound

- no sign of it in sent box

- recipient never receives

- I I fixed it once by deleting the

Gmail acct but it was doing it from

All 4 accts!! So I told apple it wasn't

The specific email acct

- one time a power cycle worked

Has anyone found if this is a bug or virus??

It does t seem to be as it goes away but then

Comes back mine always happen on weekends

I did my first post on this thread on Oct. 20 2013 (almost 2 months ago). I am on a 4S iPhone and I always keep its software up to date. The outgoing email problem started as soon as I upgraded to iOS7. Several people in this lenghty thread have gone to great lengths to try to fix this on their own without sucess. I have learned to "live with it". Here is what I believe is going on;

Turning any of your email accounts on or off will break all outgoing emails. The workaround that works for me is; if I turn an email account on or off, I immedeately do a hard reboot of the phone to re-establish all of my outgoing email connections.

I would catagorize this as a bug/defect in iOS7.

Yes in thinking back I removed hotmai

Yesterday morning and put it back

On... The odd thing is why did some

Emails go thru after I added it back then

Last night 2 out of 12 not go thru

The other times it was consistent

For 2 days to that they weren't being

Sent.

Also why does it effect all email

Accts and not just the one removed?

First time it happened all 4 of my email

Accts wouldn't send finally removing gmail

And adding it back fixed it.

Which is bizarre how that has any influence

On the other 3 but it did

2 weeks ago it happened and a power

Cycle fixed it...

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme

Or reason..

You said that a removal breaks outgoing

Emails that should never happen.

Yes a glitch.... It will always come back

Hard reset won't even fix. Sad you

CAnt delete an email acct and add it

Back. Ios7 is glitch city....

An update on this issue which I have had since the 1st ios7 update on my 4s and my ipad 2.

I wiped my phone and restored from Icloud and now instead of 1 in 3 emails dissapearing they end up in my outbox unable to be sent (been 2 weeks now). But I can then go in and hit send again and they then send ok. Not ideal still but better than dissapearing!

Also to note i'm a heavy email user.

How long this will last for who knows and I have not tried my Ipad yet.

Also I do switch my exchange email off quite a bit, so that I don't get work emails, I dont mean remove the account, just disable the email in settings. I have done this since the wipe and it hasnt caused the mails to dissapear again. So dont think this is the issue.

Some of you have said you are going to see a techy at an Apple store, can someone update how they have got on?

Dec 7, 2013 11:55 PM in response to Tommyboy8132

What do you mean 1 of 3?

Are you also saying you haven't been able

To email at all the last few weeks?

Or just when you remove and add back

An account?

I have had it happen to me on three

Different occasions. Everytime it was when

I removed an acct and added it back.

The longest it went before I realized

Was a weekend. It is one of the most

Annoying glitches as I lost 20 sent emails

A month ago... Before I realized.

It happened yesterday and became

Aware of it this morning as it was a very

Important work email.

I have a conf call w an apple engineer

Next Sunday and already emailed him

This issue which he is looking into

It's odd how removing one email

Acct can effect all the others

One time a power cycle worked the other

It worked by removing gmail and the last time

Last night it just happened with the first

3 emails I sent after removal then worked

After that.

It's bizarre to me.

Hi Vbk,

I mean on average my issue was that 1 in 3 emails sent tend not to actually send.

I'm a heavy user of my phone with emails and have had the issue since ios7 came out, so a few months now I guess.

But as i said since the reset and restore the problem has changed and in 2 weeks instead of the 1 in 3 emails dissapearing they end up in the outbox, which is a step forward as I can tell straight away that it has not sent.

I did have one occurance the other day where this did not happen, but I was trying to send a 4mb photo from the photo section by email and it did not send or go into my outbox, but I think that links to a slightly different bug that Apple have with sending large files with emails.

Anyway it just does seem that the Apple email is riddled with bugs and that they just don't care about fixing these, maybe Apple employees use blackberries as their company phones?

Vbk would be very interested to see what the Apple engineer says, how did you arrange that conf call?
