iPhone 4s iOS7 - won't sync music or video - cancels sync and hangs.

I have updated my iPhone 4s 32gig to the newest iOS7 version, and updated iTunes on my iMac to the most recent version. I have ample extra space on the phone for the amount of music and video I want to sync. I'm plugging the phone into the computer during this sync process rather than WiFi. The sync works through the backups to the computer and the apps, but as soon as it gets to the portion where it would transfer music it immediately goes to "canceling sync" and will sit there indefinitely. I have rebooted the computer, hard booted the phone (home + Power) but nothing changes. It just hangs up and I have an iPhone that was working perfectly pre-"upgrade" that no longer does what it's supposed to.

Additional details:

I am set up for automatic syncing of playlists and a few albums rather than manually managing music.

When I upgraded the iPhone, I deleted the music and movies from the phone to make room for the iOS7 rather than removing the music through a sync process.

Any ideas or is this just a "wait until Apple figures out there is a problem" type of thing?

I am having the same problem. I've tried so many different suggested solutions, but none worked for me. I really hope someone, or Apple would figure this out and push an update to become available to fix this. It's extremely frustrating.

I had this problem and this worked for me:

1) Switch iphone into airplane mode in Settings

2) Connect iphone to computer (PC) with iTunes installed

3) Untick "Sync music" in the Music Tab of the iphone, and press the 'Sync' or 'Apply' button

4) Allow phone to sync.

5) Tick the "Sync music" box, and indicate which playlists, etc you want to sync, then press the 'Sync' or 'Apply' button.

Your music should transfer. I have done this a few times.

It looks as if the phone and the computer have to have a little chat independent of the music before the music can be transferred. It may have something to do with having music from ripped CDs and purchased from iTunes on the same device? The sceptic in me thinks that it might be (slightly) intentional from Apple, as if it is easier to just download from iTunes direct to the phone compared with iTunes syncs, they make more £$£$£.

After trying every one of the tips and tricks in this thread, none worked. I finally backed up to iCloud, completely wiped my 4S, and started fresh. I also let it update to 7.0.4 and now I'm back to 100% functionality.

Unfortunately the hard way may be the only way for some. The 5S doesn't excite me, and the Moto X didn't have enough to win me over either. Going to keep the 4S and reevaluate in about 6 months.

Thanks for the help all.

After days of getting frustrated I finally found a solution: Don't use itunes to sync music. After going through pages of possible solutions (restores, syncing albums one at a time, removing all music, deactivating accounts, making a call while syncing and various other things) as well as trying to contact apple support (Which was a joke--They wanted to charge me $19.00 to get help for a problem with their software), I change my Google search terms to "how to sync music without itunes" and I found a program called CopyTrans Manager for free. It only took me a few minutes to add the new tracks to my iphone. It automatically organizes it the same way itunes would and you have the option to make your own playlists. Best of all it synced the first try! Itunes is now dead to me. Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do with all the free time I have since I'm not going to be spending hours banging my head at my computer ready to throw my phone out the window.

I have had all sorts of sync problems on both my iPhone 4S (64GB) and iPad 2 (3G 64GB) since the iOS 7 update. Not only the problems people mentioned earlier in this thread, but also iBooks not syncing, hanging at either "Cancelling sync" or "waiting for sync to start", etc.

The first thing that seems to have some positive effect is when I followed the guidelines in http://readwrite.com/2013/10/15/ios-7-fixes-iphone-4-4s#awesm=~orBUNI8JOdHGMe which @safarichick linked to. I turned off all sorts of background processing and now syncing seems to work again (at least, it has worked for an afternoon:-)

My feeling is that the analysis in the referenced readwrite.com post is correct: the previous generation devices have less RAM than the newer ones (iPhone 5 and later), and the background processing uses so much RAM that this causes instabilities. I have an incredible amount of photos and music (hence the 64GB devices), so maybe sync needs so more RAM than is available if you have all the background services running.

Well I'm having problems again. I must've been messing with it all day yesterday and just couldn't get it to sync fully. That method I used before didn't work this time. [unchecking everything in Options on iTunes, syncing then resyncing afterwards with "Sync Only checked songs and videos". Wasn't happening. Finally after looking to see what some of you guys were doing. I tried the Transfer purchases option. It helped but it was a partial sync. It took another attempt before it finally completed. BUT NOW after adding more tracks to itunes today those won't transfer to my iphone. I too have been using Copytrans but it doesn't have all the features of iTunes.. so I don't want to become too reliant on it just yet. I'd rather get Itunes going

I struggled with this repeatedly & really didn't want to do a full reset turns out the solution was very simple I turned on the icloud automatic back up over wi fi, this allowed me to skip most of the sync & backup process alltogether in itunes which was stalling at transfer purchases ALL the time. After days of trouble i could transfer music to my iphone again with no problem!!
