SOLUTION: Some Music Won't Play After Upgrading Your iPhone To iOS7

After upgrading to iOS 7, some of you, including me, started having an issue where some of your songs refuse to play on your iPhones and iPods. There was also a red square inside of a red circle next to the song which I guess, was adding to the problem of the songs not playing. I had no idea what the issue was, so I searched and searched but came out with no solution to this annoying problem. Until last night. I was just messing around in the settings app and discovered that it was neither iTunes 11 nor iOS 7 that was the cause of this problem. It's all a matter of how the settings in your iPhone or iPod are set up. Follow these instructions to get your songs working again!

Step 1: Go to the "Settings" app on your Springboard (iPhone or iPod)

Step 2: Scroll down to the "iTunes & App Store" category.

Step 3: Where it says "Automatic Downloads", turn off the "Music" slider.

Step 4: Sync and enjoy playing ALL of your music!

It took me a while to figure this out, but I'm glad that I can help you guys. Have a great day!

Thanks for your suggestion but it did not solve the problem for me. It did remove all the songs that wouldn't play that had the red square/red circle symbol but they were all songs that are in my iTunes library that I bought so I don't know what is going on. I have a iPhone 4S and I have the latest iOS7 update and latest iTunes update so I don't know what is to blame or going wrong. I just know everything was fine befgore iOS7. I also tried to remove a playlist (no sucess) and reload a playlist (no success)

Right.....we are supposed to fuc*ing erase and restore our devices all because of an OS update? Apple caused the GD problem, Apple should fix it. Everything that is showing is what I bought from iTunes, what will not play, is grayed out, and has the red circle with a square are the mp3's that I ripped from my CD's. Does this mean Apple is going to force us to buy everything from them? If that is the case, I will just buy a different mp3 player or downgrade the ios.

Hello everyone. I also had this problem after upgrading to ios7. There was no discernible pattern to the tracks affected, some were rips and others were purchased. Like everyone else I had a major panic when 90% of my music would play, but I managed to fix it last night without too much drama. Using an iphone 5, here is what I did:

1. Updated phone firmware (7.0.3?) using wifi rather than iTunes.

2. Updated to latest version of iTunes

3. Backed up phone

4. Unchecked "sync music" and synced iphone, removing all the tracks which weren't stored on the cloud

5. I then went through and unchecked all the music I had previous synced (albums, artists etc) and synced the phone again so there was no music on it at all

6. I then rebuilt my music collection from the sync music tab and resynced. Everything is now playable and there is not a red circle in sight.

Hope this works for others too!

SOLUTION! you do not need to reset restore or backup your iphone at all!

NOTE: This will take some time depending on how many songs you have.....took me about an hour to do with 2400 songs.what you have to do is remove all the songs from your phone and then re-sync them back on. this worked 100% for me.

1-simply plug phone into itunes on your computer

2-click where your iphone shows up in itunes

3-click the music tab at the top

4-UNCHECK the box beside sync music and when the prompt asks click REMOVE

*this will remove all the music off of your phone so make sure all your music is in itunes on the computer!*

5-Sync your phone

6- after the sync is finished fallow steps 1-3 again and re-click the "Sync Music" box

7- now sync your iphone again and it should all be back to normal

Correctomundo, Mitch,

It is the same for iPads. Last, week, after not finding a solution anywhere, even here, I first copied all my music to a folder on my computer, then deleted all the music out of iTunes. Sync'ed, then copied all the music back in to iTunes, from the folder on my computer, then sync'ed again.

After that, no more red circles with squares. I left my solution on here, giving it the "solution worked for me" tag, but still got emails from this forum from people saying to erase and restore.

I guess people like to take the hard way.

Take care!

I tried this solution but it didn't work for me since I haven't been able to get my iPhone 5 to sync properly since the 7.0.3 update. It tries to sync but it always gets stuck at step 5 "waiting for changes to be applied." I followed the steps mitch_rocker outlined, but it didn't remove any music from or re-add any music to my phone. Within iTunes on my PC it looked like all music was un-synched & then re-synched, but my phone kept the same number of songs through the whole process. Many of them still have the red circle/square next to them & are completely unplayable. Apple needs to put out a fix for this bug!

Fix that WORKED perfectly for me: Re-Creating (i.e., re-building) my itunes library and then syncing phone. Here's the apple support link: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451

Note: there are some caveats with re-creating a library.

So far, I don't see any songs missing. The majority of my library (~4000 songs) is ripped mp3s, but also had ~100 songs purchased on itunes. All songs, purchases, and playlist seem to intact and playing on my iPhone now. Happy again.
