Apple TV no longer works off-line

Trying to figure out if this is just me.

It is normal for me to power down my modem at night but leave my router on-line.

Previously this has not caused a problem with my apple TV since the network is up still just no internet access. I did it tonight however after updating my apple TV and it would no longer play content.

It would connect to my library and see the content but when I went to play it the message was my computer "was not authorized".

Now this has happened a long time ago (the authorization going away on my iMac) so I simply restarted the internet to authorize it again only to find out it had not lost the authorization.

Power down the modem again and try my apple TV only to get the same "not authorized"

Does the latest update to the Apple TV require an internet connection to play content now?

I didn't find help from the phone service folks either, but have found that I just have to hook both my (authorized) computer and (authorized) ATV up to the internet at the same time; this seems to show the ATV that the computer is indeed authorized, and they'll keep working for some time. I did this AFTER the last updates and have been able to stream purchased content to the ATV since. Previously I'd had to renew the process once or twice, and am not sure what causes the problem intermittently other than updates.

For those of us without unlimited streaming, this is indeed a problem with Apple content but I suppose we are relatively low on their list of priorities/market niches.

I have noticed this also a few times when my internet dies. This also applies to any content, not just itunes bought items. My apple tv will not play anything when no internet. The best work around I have found, is to start the content on the computer, in a new window, then switch it to the apple tv. Then you can control the content with the apple tv remote.
