Touch ID being Erratic

Wife and I got iPhone 5s units at the same time. She has had hit and miss success with touch ID. I am golden with mine, and also hers when I put a finger into her phone data. She is frustrated, and will delete fingerprints and resestablish on her phone. Her finger scan will work for a few times, and then it gets to be like it doesn't recognize her finger (left thumb or right thumb). Is anybody else having some issues like this?

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.0.2

My thumb is failing now again. The other fingers seem to be holding up just fine. I am wondering if its just my funky thumb that is making it do this? going to re enroll based upon your suggestions joe. If theres any others you can offer to me for success please do. thanks.

I suggest taking a picture of your finger doing a successful click and make it your lock screen wallpaper. It helps to see what you're supposed to do if it starts failing again.

Hello everyone if you tried all these troubleshooting steps & still have issues save yourself time & go to Apple Store & swap your phone did that yesterday my Touch ID in my new iPhone been working 100% FYI they didn't give me any hard time to replace it,

I found out that my replacement phones actually appear to be good, so cancelled my plans to return them tomorrow. Initially after getting them, I installed the restore image from the phones that I returned. As I tested the new phones, I noticed the same finger print failure problem, so assumed the phones were also bad. However, after I erased and reset them to factoy default, the touch id worked perfectly for over a day and a half. So, there must have been something in the restore image that screwed them up. I plan to keep them now. I must say, it's a nice feature when it works well.

Same issue. Touch Id worked FLAWLESSLY for some time (maybe 10 days, I dont remember) after I bought 5s. It worked with sweat fingers. I remember, I was on a concert, I was completely wet and it worked with no problem!!! I played with It a lot, re-recorded the prints many times and it worked!!! But than it started to fail about 75% of my attempts, sometimes its really hard even to record the print (getting the "fingerprint can not be read" errors). I think, that 7.0.2 or 7.0.3 update ruined my touch id. Now, the print only works for some time after recording. It can be hour or 15 minutes and than it starts to fail, sometimes cleaning the sensor with t-shirt helps, sometimes not... But,seriously, for the first days it worked without any cleaning...

It looks like a software problem, that came with one of the updates.

I am very disapointed, that the issue is not wide-spread... The more people will have it, the more attention it will get. So if you are reading it and have same issue, PLEASE, log in and write about it, DONT BE SILENT!

Maybe, the "As you use Touch ID, it will continue to learn and improve recognition of your fingerprint." feature was affected and started to spoil the experience with every unlock.

Boy, did this thread give me a good laugh! I started reading the posts and discovered that my wife and I are apparently not the only people having a problem with Touch ID reliability. My phone works as advertised and my wife's phone works for me but not for her... What the heck is going on with iPhones purchased by married couples??? 😉

Last night as we struggled to get her phone working properly trying some of the "fixes" suggested in this thread I got an idea: I took a close look at the fingers my wife has been using to unlock her iPhone.

Both fingers have less than perfect skin. Instead of clear fingerprints there are tiny scars and what looks like staining. My spouse is 66 years old and for many years she has done yardwork and gardening without using gloves (I always wear gloves...) As a result her fingers exhibit a lot more wear and tear than my fingers. Could the lack of a reasonably clear fingerprint be the cause of the problem? It makes a lot of sense to me since the fingerprint technology appears to rely on multiple "reads" of the user's fingerprint structure...

As a test my wife used a couple of fingers that are in much better condition. After she did that Touch ID began to work on her phone. Today will be the first full day of use so by the end of the day we should have a good idea if this workaround works or not...

One question: How does one "delete" an existing fingerprint? I haven't found a way to do this...

We are still having a problem with the app icons not responding to touch as I detailed in this thread: 5S Icons Don't Always Respond To Touch... https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5552989

Hit Edit in the upper right corner and then click on the red minus icon next to the print you want to delete. You can also label them by clicking and typing. When done editing, tap Done in the upper right. You can audit whether a print is working from that same page. Just click the sensor and when it works the line for that finger will flash with a dark background. It's a good way to check which finger controls which line, as well as a way to audit the effectiveness of a newly enrolled print. Sometimes my prints fail (like after taking a shower), but I can go to that page and see the highlighting to determine when it starts working again. If if never does, then it's time to delete it and create a new one.

So, I was going to fight the temptation to go to the Apple store and get a new replacement 5s. The reviews have been mixed as to whether a new phone serial number resolves the ongoing TID issues. Well, I failed finally in that temptation. I began to experience a home button that felt loosened up and would have an initial small click before the actual execution click. It would then go away and be firm again. After a period of inactivity with the home button, it would then manifest the same behavior. I did a Google on it and there are some similar threads out there. In any event, I hit the Apple store this morning expressing the TID issue and the new found home button issue. With AppleCare (so worth the $$), no questions were asked and a new unit was delivered on the spot. I restored the phone from a iTunes backup and registered my three fingers once each in the style of what has been learned in this forum thread. After 10 hours, not a single miss on any finger and entry is blazing fast. Maybe there is something to be said about a new piece of hardware. It is still early in the process, I know, and I will report in a few days with status.

It says my new device was made week 38 (September 2013). Made in China, Chengdu (DN factory). I no longer have my old unit, but my wife's unit was purchased at the exact same time (together as they both hit the local Sprint store). I assume it would be the same. Her data states made week 36 (September 2013). Made in China, Zhengzhou (F2 factory). Hope this helps and maybe means something. This morning my TID is blazing fast and is almost instantaneous on all three fingers again. If this keeps up for a couple days, I am back to the local Apple Store to do the same thing and get a replacement for my wife's 5s.
