Touch ID being Erratic

Wife and I got iPhone 5s units at the same time. She has had hit and miss success with touch ID. I am golden with mine, and also hers when I put a finger into her phone data. She is frustrated, and will delete fingerprints and resestablish on her phone. Her finger scan will work for a few times, and then it gets to be like it doesn't recognize her finger (left thumb or right thumb). Is anybody else having some issues like this?

Here's something that I noticed today. As long as I keep my finger on the sensor for at least one second after pressing the touch-id sensor, I get 100% success.

It makes me think that they may have increased the time it scans to get a more accurate sample.

Wait, are you saying you always pressed the home button and immediately removed your finger?

If so, it's no wonder you have always had problems with TID. You _always_ had to leave your finger on the home button until it unlocked. That's how it works...

What started out looking promising has not turned out well. Left thumb and right index finger enrolled on 3/10 after the 7.1 upgrade totally failed today. Left index added 3/11 failed with only the central area still recognized.

Right thumb enrolled 2/23, before the 7.1 upgrade still working fine.

And I had such hopes multiple fingers would be fixed. Going back to one only.

I have 2 phones and each has both thumbs enrolled. Both phones have the same experience.

I have about 5 minutes after hand washing when the touch id fails every time. I have about 1.5 hours after showering when the touch id fails every time. I enrolled swollen fingers after a shower, and they still work during the rest of the 24 hours. I deleted the enrollments from normal fingers.

I’ve had the 1st part of the enrollment go as many as 14 touches on a finger that I intentionally moved on each touch. On an enrollment with little movement, the 1st part was over after just 6 touches. The 2nd part of the enrollment seems to be just 6 touches, no matter how much I move it around. I think they made it possible to do more touches at enrollment.

I have not been able to expand an enrollment by touching an existing print by going back days later and touching to get it to flash. I tried this with swollen fingers after a shower, and had zero success.

On the settings page, I notice the finger doesn’t just flash, but stays hi-lited as long as I don’t move my finger off the sensor. It also seems to me that there’s a noticable delay from when I touch the sensor until the finger hi-lites. This makes me think that I need to keep my finger on the sensor a bit longer. In fact, I try to say to myself “one thousand one”, which I know is a full second, when trying to unlock the phone.

I have the same problem ! After installing the new software the Touch ID stopped working. I believe that apple changed the temperature sensitivity for the Touch ID scanner. If you try placing your finger on a cold surface (Ice) then placing it on the main button, the Touch ID will work as long as your finger is cold. I hope that apple will be able to fix the problem soon, as it is really frustrating to have a reliable hardware that can not be used.

My phone (touch wood) is working exactly like it was designed to work now. I wonder if it is as simple as this: I stopped using my TID for a few wreeks before the update came out. I never even tried it before installing the update. So when I decided to try it I was starting fresh with the new update. I wasn't bringing in any old stuff re TID. Most of you who are having problems were using the TID up till the update and now it is no better or even worse. Also I only enrolled my right thumb, not multiple fingers. Maybe you should start fresh by deleting all old fingers (and new ones made since the update) and then enroll one finger to see how it works. This is just a theory of mine but perhaps it will help you.

Since 7.1 update it's been nearly flawless for me. I can't recall a single failure since.

For those still having problems, I can almost guarantee you that a restore from DFU mode will fix it. Transfer all purchases from the phone to iTunes and back up to iTunes first. Here's how to put the phone in DFU mode when connected to your computer via iTunes: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5409794

Restore the phone and set up "as new." Go through the steps to set up the phone, including enrolling you finger print. Once the phone is set up, go back to iTunes and restore again, but this time use your backup. This will put the phone back the way you had it, and you will not have to enroll the print again. Now TID should work flawlessly. I can't vouch for multiple print enrollments, but for just one finger this works for me 100% after the 7.1 update.

I just wanted to add an update to my experience with 7.1. TID only works flawlessly for me with 1 fingerprint scanned. As a test, I scanned both thumbs and within a matter of a few days experienced failure of both with no recovery. However, scanning only one thumb resulted in flawless operation for a full week now. Before the update there was 1 period where I got a few days, but my typical experience was failure within 24 hours.

So, while I am happy it is at least partly working well for me, I do hope there will come a time when I can have more then 1 finger to open my phone.

I'd agree with that, I tried registering four fingers and ensuring every day at least twice I used every finger, thinking perhaps over time they were degrading and using them more frequently would help. 7.1 did work longer, but after a few days only one my index finger would work and shortly after it started having issues as well. I haven't tried only registering one finger, but it makes sense it would work better, something in the scanning/updating/learning of the prints over time is corrupting them. They all work flawlessly when you first register them for awhile, so something the TID is doing once they are registered over time is altering them to the point they are not recognised.
