iPhone 5s mic problem

People are saying they can not hear me clearly when I'm talking. I have tried speaker phone and the head set as well but it doesn't fix the issue... Has anyone else had this issue and if so how did you resolve it or was it just an issue with the phone (I just got it yesterday)

I have had same problem. Went to Apple store for problem with iPhone 5 and also told them about people complaining they could not hear me. Did get phone changed due to the main reason I went to the store but volume no better with new phone. I am also interested to see if others have this problem and if anything can be done to improve volume so I can be heard when using iPhone.

Hi this is definitely an issue with my iphone 5s as well. As soon as i lie down in bed the other person cannot hear me clearly. The voice is significantly muffled. I have tested this several times and have swapped for a new phone but the pro lem persists. I an going to try a third brand new handset and if the problem still exists will cancel my 24 month mobile plan asap!

I've refrained from bringing my 3rd 5S back into the Apple store because I am of the impression that this is a regional-specific issue; as in, certain shipments from certain factories all share the same defect(s).. I'm hoping that by waiting and / or going to a different Apple store that the replacement will have come from a different factory..?

I have noticed an exacerbation of the problem when holding it to my left ear (with my left hand.. <-- if that's relevant..?). Switching to the right ear/hand seems to relieve some of the "muffling"

I really don't understand how Apple could have f'd up this badly.. This is my first experience with iPhone (switched from Android) and I'm definitely not impressed...

As jiak so appropriately put it; "if the phone feature fails to work on a phone i refuse to call it a phone"

FOR REAL!!!

Guys, I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out what causes the muffled sound during call. I have been recording my own voice using TapeACall app and also calling my own number which goes into Voicemail so I can make a recording. The one position that clearly degrades the audio significantly is if I lie down and turn even slightly to the right. In this position, the further I hold the handset away from the mouth the worse the voice gets which is not the case if I am sitting upright or standing. So I have made many recordings while lying down and turning to the right as evidence to be able to go to Telstra, my phone company today and have a final attempt at a third handset. If they allow me to cancel my 24 months contract that is ideal for me but otherwise I am selling the unit and moving on to a non Apple product asap. After having used 7 smartphones in the last few years it would be stupidity and unsatisfying to be holding a $1000 phone that can't even produce acceptable call quality which by the way my $50 Nokia 301 is excellent at. Lets see.

I waited a month as well before getting my 3rd replacement phone (did not help). Insist on getting a white box phone because they kept giving me a service phone. With the white box phone the hope is that it's coming from a new / different lot if you wait long enough. I am still waiting to get a phone that does not have this issue. Will update if i succeed.

Adding my two cents: Got my new 5S 16 gig phone at the (West) Los Angeles Store on Sepulveda Bl. last week. From the very first call I made with it, I was being told while on phone calls that my voice "sounds like you're muffled" or "I can't understand you... you sound like you're in a tunnel."

Unlike some other posters in this thread, though, if I switch to speaker phone, the quality improves; at least, that's the perception of those I'm talking with.

This is really frustrating. I had an Iphone4 before, with no like issues, that was running OS 7.03. I hope this is a software issue that can be fixed. Got my fingers crossed!

I just initiated and tested the following "fix" I read about on a blog website. I then made several calls to folks who had complained about my phone call quality and they told me my voice and the calls sound normal now. Yeah!! The solution is to turn off "Noise Cancellation." Go to Settings > General > Accessibility and turn Phone Noise Cancellation OFF.

Hope this works for everyone.

I do have exactly the same problem, however I have investigated it and found out that it works fine while you keep left borrom corner of the phone on your palm so microphone gets reflected sound from your palm it seems

But once I move my palm away from left bottom corner they cant hear me..

I would like to see whether this is a feature of a bug ..

I received my first replacement phone and so far the voice quality is better. I have not yet been told that I am garbled when I speak to someone. Also, on the first phone, the fingerprint access did work for more than a day before I would have to make new fingerprints and this new phone is better with that as well. Hopefully they are fixing these problems.
