iPhone 5s mic problem

People are saying they can not hear me clearly when I'm talking. I have tried speaker phone and the head set as well but it doesn't fix the issue... Has anyone else had this issue and if so how did you resolve it or was it just an issue with the phone (I just got it yesterday)

I have had same problem. Went to Apple store for problem with iPhone 5 and also told them about people complaining they could not hear me. Did get phone changed due to the main reason I went to the store but volume no better with new phone. I am also interested to see if others have this problem and if anything can be done to improve volume so I can be heard when using iPhone.

I also wanted to add that I have never had a problem with Siri, so she understands me fine. I think it's a software issue. I've noticed that it happens to me after I take the phone off my ears, so that the screen lights up again and then the microphone will just stop working. This could be something to do with the software then. I still haven't had enough experience with it though but the fact that no matter how much I move my phone around with Siri it still works leads me to think its not a hardware issue, but a software one.

I have the same issue...gold iPhone..dunno if the color matters?

my Siri and talk to text functions work fine

occasionally my mic does work clearly, but mostly not clear and people say i am garbled. speakerphone works about 60 percent of the time clearly

i reset the phone and apple is calling me tomorrow to ask about the issue again. the reset did not help

i think it is a hardware issue

So I had my appointment today. Basically genius bar said if I can't replicate the issue, then they can't replace it. I couldn't get my mic not to work at that moment so yea... The apple guy said it might be a software and told me to do a hard reset. He said if it was a hardware issue the mic would always cut off... and not just periodically. I will evaluate it for the next month and see what happens... please let me know if you guys still have this problem.

Same problem with Iphone 5s on most calls people tell me that sound is muffled. Asked today some of my colleagues to call my landline from my phone, and could hear sound cutting of at times, muffled some other times and neat and clear some others.

It's starting to be really frustrating. I think it gets better when I am standing straight as opposed to lying down on the sofa etc...

Just tested the voice memo functionality, it seems that I have the same problem when recording my voice: I can barely hear what I say. If I disable the noise cancellation feature and record myself again I can suddently hear my voice loud and clear but then the I can hear every single noise around me. Does anybody have the same problem?

Same problem as OP, started when I upgraded to 7.0.2. I've reset the iPhone, reset all settings, etc.

Mic works fine via headphones or on speaker. Noise cancellation or hearing aids enabled doesn't fix a thing.

Calling my landline it's clear I need to keep the phone close to my mouth to be heard, 2" away is bearily understandable, 3" or more is useless.

Alright so I got my phone swapped. What happened with my phone seems to be a different situation from yours. With my phone, the other person couldn't hear me cause the phone was stuck on Calling. I don't know why this was, but I got the phone swapped out. I'm still testing this new one out. We'll see what happens. Your situation seems to be a mic issue. Definitely bring it in to check.

THIS IS MY THIRD IPHONE 5S SINCE RELEASE DAY. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING ISSUE. I am having a significant level of difficulty typing because of how upset I am at this situation. I bought a 32GB iPhone 5S on release day and thought I was in for a treat! Boy was I wrong...

3/4 times I use the phone I am told:

"I'm having a REALLY hard time hearing you right now"

"What?!?"

"You sound muffled!"

"You sound garbled"

"Speak up! I can BARELY hear you!!"

The extent to which Apple attempts to resolve the issue is disgusting. For example:

^^ least helpful article ever.

I have taken my phone into the (same) Apple store twice and have had it replaced twice. I have been told that there is no diagnostic test that can be run to check the hardware/software and that, "if others are hearing you as muffled it is because of a faulty microphone" by the Apple technician who replaced my phone both times. I am now on my THIRD iPhone 5S since release day and things are looking pretty bleak...
