Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

I am unable to send emails from a POP3 email account, though I can receive them. I have tried using different ports for the outgoing smpt server: 25, 587 and neither works. I have contacted my ISP provider who is not blocking port 25 (which was suggested)

I am unable to send emails from a POP3 account on my macbook pro. I can receive them. SMTP outgoing mail server ports 25 and 587 have been tried. I have followed the threads suggesting BT Homehub may be the problem and have adjusted settings. All to no avail. Any help will be gratefully received. All works fine on my IPAD (smpt port 587) and my Iphone. It is simply on the computer that this problem exists. The Apple support information suggested the ISP might be blocking port 25 - I have phone them and they are not doing this. So I am at my wits end!

The problem is that the server doesn't like the way your computer is identifying itself:

You: EHLO macbookf0:b4:79:21:d5:0c.home

Server: 501 Syntactically invalid EHLO argument(s)

This seems to be an issue specific to BT Homehub routers. There also seems to be a way to change the settings of the router to avoid it:

OSX 10.6 Mail SMTP fail (fine on Entourage, iPad and iPhone)

I can't tell you specifically how to change that setting because I know nothing about the device.

Hi.

We will try what you suggest - not possible till tomorrow morning.

However I do not understand why the Home hub works fine for this macbook pro to talk to the icloud mail and gmail smtp servers, just not when it's talking to the Acorn output smtp server. Also the home hub works with iphone and ipad talking to the Acorn output smtp server too.

So it seems to be only a problem for this macbook pro talking to one particular server. Everything else works absolutely fine through the BT Home Hub.

But we did find that this macbook pro could connect to Acorn smtp server using BTWifi.

The BT wifi community works by users allowing a small proportion of their Homehub bandwidth to be shared with other BT wifi members. The chances are that the BT hotspot you connected to was a Homehub so it suggests that the problem is with your particular one. Is it one of the latest models (do a Google search for "telling the difference between Homehub routers" or something similar and compare with yours)? If it is not one of the latest models (i think it is Homehub 3), call BT and see if they will replace it. I have found BT fairly open to negotiation, particularly if you are near the end of your annual contract.

Dear Linc

You are a genius!! This has solved my problem.

I renamed my Mac (Preferences, shared) to a simple name. Did the same on the BT Router. Restarted both and bingo!

It seems to be an issue between the BT Home Hub, the Acorn Server and the Macbook pro. We experimented with another, windows, machine and had the same problem. So BT home hub and the configuration of the Acorn Server seem to be the common denominators. It is interesting that other employees, with diverse machines do not seem to have had the same problems.

The BT Home hub works fine with my ipad and with my iphone.

I am extremely grateful.

Thank you very much indeed.
