Above is the error that I started receiving this morning. The phone wasn't plugged into anything and appeared to have turned off due to a low battery. The phone was unresponsive when I hit the lock screen button or home button. When I plugged it into a wall outlet with the original USB cord and wall adapter, it initially showed that it had a low battery. After a few minutes once it had enough power to start, the Apple logo displayed normally for a few seconds and then the screen went dim and displayed the above error.

I then pushed and help the lock screen button and home button together until it turned off to hard reset it. I held the home button and plugged it into my Mac Mini so that it would go into recovery mode.

When I am prompted to restore the device iTunes states that it is preparing the iPhone to be restored, the phone itself will turn off and back on with the Apple logo temporarily until it goes back to the the error screen at the top of this post. iTunes displays that it is waiting...

When iTunes finally gives up, it will throw an unexpected error of either 4005 or 4013

I've seen similar discussions such as:

iPhone 4S Stuck at boot showing [NAND] ? https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4109291?start=0&tstart=0

Well I was using my iphone 5, When ..... i get the same error , https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5332446

My iphone 5 wont move ..... offset 1 Someone PLEASE HELP ME! https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4977481

and several others but none of which have been helpful. I've seen some actual Apple employees post on the discussions but nothing useful; the typical have you read the troubleshooting steps, here's some links to error messages, etc...that don't explain what this issue is and what I can do to resolve it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Guys, I had the same problem. My Little Cutie dipped my i5 in water. It was giving speaker issue in first 2 min. I did a power reset and gave nand error. I tried connecting to my lap and stuff. But no go. Same nand error. Then i removed the display and dried with hair dryer. Still no go. It was like that for 4 days. Yesterday i tried again and still itunes was not recognising my phone. So i did some steps and it got resolved by Gods Grace.

Steps:

1. Press the home button and connect the USB cable to the phone.

2. It will take you to itunes screen.

3. Go to itunes and it will give you an option that iphone detecting for restore.

4. Click on restore and wait till it completed.

5. While doing this your phone will restart couple of times.

6. Then remove the cable.

7. Reconnect the USB and hold volume up button and power button at the same time.

8. Check itunes.

9. I got the phone back with all working.

Thanking Almighty for getting my phone back. They were asking $200 for a new display to rectify the issue,

Take care. Have a nice one guys.

I had the same experience. The phone worked normally for several days after water went into it and was dried with rice. But it was already damaged internally. The error message will appear more and more frequently till the phone completely stops working. I changed the screen by myself and it works. Now my iphone 5 works like a brand new one with a new screen and new battery.

Thank you for this graphic TLT user and your response for the error as you helped me figure out a very interesting solution to my and our issue and it worked for me! Great Thanks!!! 🙂

As a matter of fact, it is your solution that does work as well as Biggyskittle's. But, read on if you would like to know why this error is thrown and the complexity is actually much more simple than everyone maybe thought.

SOLUTION (that worked for me) : Simply and gently wipe off the contacts on the IC chip or main board where this Proximity/Frontal Camera Flex Cable's connection attaches. You may also have to inspect and clean in the same fashion the connector's contacts on the Flex cable as well.

It appears that at least some or all of us that have iPhone 5 phones that experienced this problem had initial trouble from either damage to the phone or something as simple as dropping and not realizing this error until we went to use it, had thrown the NAND 601 with "Unclean Shutdown." We all know how DELICATE these flex ribbons and their connectors are...who knows maybe a bad lot of Proximity/Camera Flex Connectors caused this???) Whatever the cause, we all have the same denominating point of failure.

Anyway, your (TLT User) picture recognizing that built resistance was occurring on the system board, I gave the near impossible task of viewing the contacts on system board where the Camera Flex cable attaches. My eyesight isnt the best so I put on STRONG magnified Reading Glasses and saw that there were metal fragments from this connector on system board itself. Which makes sense because others either swapped the main board or popped on another complete LCD / Digitizer Screen (with Button and Front Camera and all new Flex cables. But, before you purchase anything, gently clean the mb's and flex connectors, re assemble phone and turn it on and you might be surprised.)

Please check solution above and also checkout Biggyskittle's solution which I'd done as well and if it weren't for all his work, I wouldn't have noticed metal fragments in between a couple contacts creating resistance on and throwing the 601 NAND error.

hi mate, sorry to bother but I was changing my iphone 5 screen, and accidentally i was removing the screen once i had already changed it because the speakers were doing a funny sound and then all of sudden I got this error...maybe I tear it a bit the screen and the flex cables...no idea really..

i saw ur post and it says that if u disconnect the camera flex it will work?

there are 3 flax cables,

screen

camera and one more i can't remember.

any chances of helping me out on this one?

should i leave the camera flex off and the other 2 connected?

thanks in advance

I got this after changing a customers screen. What I did was disconect the front camera and the phone booted ok. Updated the phone to the lastest iOS and did a backup of the phone using iTunes. So I did a restoration and choose to restore from a backup, and while I was getting the restoring message on the phone screen I connected the front camera flex again to the board, and voila, the phone boots ok now. But this phone problem is the front camera flex, after the screen changing. Now it boots ok but no ear speaker and no front camera works, ence the ear speaker uses the front camera flex cable to work. So, now the problem is only it. Changing it tomorrow and I hope to have another customer happy. I hope its helpfull to you guys, in my case worked that way.
