Mails send with Apple Mail get displayed always with font times new roman. Is there are workaround? When does Apple fix this. It´s unprofessional if you have to use mail for business.

It´s hard to believe that Apple hasn´t fixed this problem until now, that every mail I send to a PC get displayed with times new roman.

I´m using Apple Mail for my business mails also. So this is a problem.

Are there any other having the same problem? Does anyone know a professional workaround to get this under control?

Mail is not changing the font. It just doesn't specify it, leaving it up to the recipient's email client to decide how to present it. Send yourself an email with a styled signature and then inspect the email source. You will notice that your email content comes just before a <span> tag that sets all the styling. The content should be within that <span> and the </span>, not before. This is a simple programming error on Apple's part that I've been reporting for years.

There are two ways around it:

1. Select your text and choose a font or size that is different from whatever default you have set in your Mail preferences. This will force Mail to apply that styling to your content, but is quite tedious.

2. Use UniversalMailer. It is a bit clumsy and unsupported, and you'll have to update (or wait for an update) whenever Apple releases an update to Mail.

The best option is obviously to keep reporting the issue, and they might finally fix this simple bug that's been there for close to 20 years now (I was a beta tester for OS X 1.0 and reported it back then). The more the better.

Hello lex,

For me this happens with both outlook and mail.app for every version from 2012 untill now (in the picture is outlook).

Outlook 2008 14.4.2 (up to date).

Mail.app 7.3

My OS X is maverick and before Mountain Lion.

My mac is a macbook pro Retina medio 2012.

I have send the email to:

windows 7 with outlook 2003.

windows 7 with outlook 2007

windows xp with outlook 2003.

all have had similar results.

I have tried so far to use different mail clients but they all seem to do the same.

I tried reinstalling my mac completely and it still persists.

I was hoping someone else could try it as well and see what they get, the font that I like to use is Century Gothic.

Thanks for helping.

Ja, vreemd. I understand now, that it is not just the font type, which is Outlook's doing (or a lot of other mail apps), but that you also get lines displayed at the receiver side with different font sizes than you have sent. Never seen this before. << I stopped using Outlook several years ago on my Windows PC's (I use a browser to read emails in Windows), my Windows PC's are only used to run technical installations.>>

Question: does it do exactly the same for different fonts from the mac sender?

btw: you have a much different toolbar on the mail windows?

Trying to use a non standard font is going to display differently when received. Stick with the standard fonts for your emails. If the receiver does not have the font you specified, it will substitute a font it has. As a result all that careful formatting you did will display poorly.

Use your special font in your sig but put it in an image so it displays properly.

HTML in Outlook is very basic. It's not meant to be complex HTML.

If you want to send out stylized newsletters there is software for that. However I don't consider this to be business email.

The fonts we have on our Macs are not always installed on a Windows computer. Especially one that is running an older version of Windows.

The differences in how each email client renders HTML varies widely. This is especially true between Mac and PCs. Email is a means of communicating and it's your words that actually count, not how they look.

The new, WebKit based editor in Outlook uses pixels. The difference is that pixels will typically render much smaller on your device that the same point.

Outlook's size 14 is equivalent to Entourage2008's size 12.

Note: Try the new “c” fonts they display better in a cross platform situation.
