clipping sound on new iMac when Logix X is running

I just got the new iMac that was released two weeks ago yesterday. All I did was set it up with Logic X, Main Stage, and Aperture all from the app store. nothing else was put on it. I opened up logic just to check it out and see how much faster the performance would be. I just wanted to give it a quick test and played some apple loops I immideatly noticed it was making a clipping sound randomly. The meters were not peaking everything was in the green and if you turned down the gain the clipping just got quiteter. I called apple support thinking it was a hardware issue. They had me do some trouble shooting like playing the same loops through quicktime and the clipping persisted. they also had me play a youtube video to see if I could hear the clipping. It wasn't as noticible but it was there. Apple decided that it would be a good idea to reformat the computer tomorrow and start over. Sounded fine to me seeing how I didn't have much installed yet. I did a little more trouble shooting on my own after I got off the phone with apple. First I made a copy of three apple loops and put them on my desktop then restarted the computer. Then after a fresh restart and nothing running I opened one of the apple loops off the desktop with quicktime player and it sounded great no clipping. Same with You Tube. I then opened Logic Pro X. Did nothing with it but minimize it. I then went back to quick time player and tried to play the loop again. This time the clipping was back. Same with You Tube.

My conclusion for some reason when logic is running the audio makes a random clipping sound no matter what audio program you play the audio through. (Clipping sound comes out of the internal speakers as well as headphones)

All of my software is up to date.

I am running:

27" iMac

3.5GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

If anybody has experienced this same problem or has any recomendations they would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to reformat in the morning and try and start again.

I will post my results

Thank you,

Aaron

Ad,

I would not recommend ever doing any form of migration from one Mac to another unless they happen to be two identical models...

So many people report issues in both the short and long term when using the migration method between different Macs... that really it is just asking for trouble.

While it takes longer, I would suggest you install everything from scratch... This provides two main benefits.

1) You don't bring existing or hidden issues to a new Setup...

2) You only install what you use therefore doing a kind of 'spring clean' if you like.. and ending up with a more lean/clean setup..

Finally, manually transfer personal data/projects/music/photos/etc over... from your old Mac to your new one..

Once you have everything configured setup, installed and tested.. then make a clone of your system drive that you can go back to quickly if anything you install in the future causes issues. This is a huge time saver... should you ever have any issues.

Again, I know this is a bit of a hassle to to all this from scratch but the benefits really do tend to outweigh the initial time it takes to achieve all this...

+1 Pancenter....

Wiping out your system drive.. installing SL from a clone (that isnt a clone made using the same hardware config) and then updating from SL to Mavericks... is not the best idea especially as the new hardware you have, wont work correctly with SL because SL doesn't have the drivers etc for the various components in your new Mac... Even though you said you would install 10.9 right away you are 'over installing' a very old OS with a very new one.. and so lots of stuff from the old OS will be left over and likely cuase issues of one kind or another.

As I said in my earlier post...You will just be asking for trouble in my experience trying to do anything other than a full install from scratch... under these circumstances... so while it takes much longer.. save yourself all kinds of future headaches and take the time now to do everything the right way rather than the convenient way.

Nigel - thanks for the help on the upgrade. I will take your advice and swallow the extremely bitter medicine of reinstalling everything. There is about a terabyte of samples and Program data that needs to be transferred though (Bfd, Kontakt, etc), so I'm hoping I don't have to reinstall that stuff; otherwise, it will take weeks to accomplish. I'm certainly not going to try and convert all my Akai Cd-Roms through EXS-24 again, so I'm hoping I can just copy those files over somehow However, I assume I will have trouble reinstalling Logic 9 from iTunes based on some other users' experience, although I do have the original discs.

I guess I'll get to that bridge next week when the iMac arrives.

Again thanks for yours and others help and advice. Much appreciated.

Ad,

You cannot install LP9 from iTunes (The App Store) if originally you bought LP9 as a DVD boxed version.

LP9 only appears as an app you can download/install via the App Store if you originally bought it via the App Store.

Once you have installed LP9 via the DVDs then you can update it to the latest version via the Updates section of the App Store application.. but you cannot install it from scratch via that method.

Samples etc.. you can transfer via your backups.. but be aware you will have to add them manually into Kontakt again... Not a problem except Kontakt will not know where they are if you load in old projects into LP9 and the location of your sample libraries is not the same on the same drive with the same drive name as they were when you saved out the projects in LP9 . When you load in an old project into LP9 that uses Kontakt, Kontact will tell you it cannot find your samples and you will have to use Kontact's "find sample" options in the missing samples dialog box that will appear... to locate them again and once done you will then have to save out that project.

This is one of the reasons for keeping all Sample Libraries etc on an external HD so you don't have to go through this situation if the ext HD fails.. You just make sure the replacement ext HD has the same name as the old one and Kontakt will not be aware you have changed HDs... so it will know that the samples, as far as Kontakt is aware, are in the same place as they have always been.

I hope that makes sense?

Greeting All,

I recently created a spreadsheet in Numbers to help me keep track of all of the related information (licenses, websites, file sizes, etc.) for all the plugins and audio software I use. It is simply inevitable that in our vocation, we all eventually need to replace our aging computers, replace our hard drives and sometimes migrate to a different DAW. Having your software info at hand makes these transitions less painful and time consuming.

Hi all,

I'm having about the same issue...

Let me tell the story..

I bought the new 2013 21 inch iMac when it came out, directly online on the Belgian Apple Sore, with 16gb of ram and Fusion Drive. But I had some problems with my M-audio Fast Track Pro : after about 10 minutes, the sound started to be completely distorted, and the only option was to unplug it and plug it back and it was working again for again some 10 minutes (this was not only in the DAW but with any audio such as itunes, youtube..)

So I thought well, this is a USB 1 interface and the iMac has USB 3, so that would be the problem + I've had already minus trouble with the Fast Track Pro with my previous computer so I really thought that it was the problem.

So i just ordered a Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 (Fire Wire) for 185 euros + obviously the Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter (30 euros !) + I realized I also had to buy a FireWire 400 to 800 cable since the cable included in the box was Firewire 400 to 400 (+ 15 euros..).

All that money spent for nothing, the Saffire pro 14 simply doesn't work. No sound at all, and not only in Logic but also in iTunes and youtube. Then when I change some parameters in the Saffire mix control (such as switching between 44 and 48 kHz) I have some sound for about 10 seconds then it drops again. I tried both the soundcard powered with the power suply and bus powered.

So as you can imagine I'm completely depressed. I spent both my money and a lot of time and in the end it is all for nothing.. I wish I had found this tread before...

And I really don't konw what to do, should I wait for Apple to fix it, since they're already aware of it, should I return my iMac and replace it with one without Fusion Drive (so ironic, I have to buy something less expensive in order for the stuff to work....), but I kind of would like to keep Fusion Drive (and by the way how can I be sure Fusion Drive is really the problem??), do I keep the Saffire pro 14 or not... And also who should I try to contact first, apple or focusrite.. I'm too tired right now to call anybody, I wanna die in peace (joke)

Anyway sorry for this long post, I hope you'll read me and hope we'll all find a solution..

Hi quick update on what I have managed to understand from my talks with Apogee Digital.

They're gathering as many system profiles as possible to force Apple to acknowledge the problem and come up with a solution.

Also, they're trying to figure out if the problem is related to the fusion drive or the processor.

So, to debug this, I'm trying to find out:

Is there anyone with a 3,5 GHz Intel Core i7 that does NOT have this problem?

Is it confirmed that the iMac late 2013 with Fusion drive when booted from an external disk does NOT have the problem?

Does the same problem happen on previous versions of OSX? Say Lion or Mountain Lion?

My findings so far:

This is not a USB problem. The same happens with Firewire devices.

I have had problems both with an Apogee ONE USB and an Apogee DUET Firewire. They differ a little bit on how soon the clicks pops and distortion happen, but eventually both stop working

I would bet (I hope) this is a Core Audio problem and should be fixable.

All my USB or Firewire devices (other than audio) work normally. Hard drives, mouse, etc. Only audio related devices are having these symptoms.

Thank you.

I thought Apple had acknowledged the problem as being the software interface that controls the Fusion Drive.

Summary as far as I am aware going through the various threads here and elsewhere along with reports from my own client base.

If anyone has any personal information that contradicts any of the following, please post up here.

Thanks!

1) All 2013 iMacs with a Fusion Drive (FD) demonstrate this issue even just using the built in Audio and iTunes

2) 2013 iMacs without a FD (either SSD or mech HD) do not seem to have this issue. My own 2013 imac with Mech Drive does not have this issue.

3) A few people who own 2013 iMacs and FDs have reported improvements once they updated to Mavericks.

4) Even less have reported the problem was completely cured after installing Mav.

5) 2013/2012 Mac Minis with FDs do not demonstrate this issue.

6) Apple Hardware/Engineering Dev team is aware of the issue and suspect it is a problem revolving around the FD controller hardware/software used in 2013 iMacs with FDs. It may also have something to do with the Haswell Processor used in combination with the FD hardware/software but that has not been confirmed as yet.

7) There is a different issue that is caused by Audio Interface drivers that need to be updated For Mavericks compatibility. The pops and clicks effect heard are similar but are not present using the inbuilt Audio... only via the External Audio Interface and can affect any Mac.

8) The issue is not related to/dependant on a specific DAW such as Logic or Ableton... or version. It affects them all equally.

That is indeed the main thrust of their investigation as far as I am aware..... but there are some reports that it may also be connected with some form of weird conflict between the FD controller software/hardware and the Haswell too but again, this has not been confirmed.

I'm beginning to wonder if my sound issue is a different problem? I do get (alot) clicks and pops when using iTunes, but only if I use it together with Cubase or any other sound application, and when the buffer size is set to a low value. If I raise the buffer size above 1056 samples, the issue goes away.

I have only experienced distortion 5-6 times when opening a new project in Pro Tools, but only once in iTunes...

Do you guy experience clicks and pops or distortion when using iTunes, with no other sound application open?
