My iPhone 4s will not charge

I've had my iPhone for almost 2 years now, my upgrade is due in a couple of months- so it may just be that the battery is worn out, but any alternative possible solutions would be great.

All of a sudden its just stopped charging- never had any previous problems or signs that the battery was on its last legs- just plugged it in last night and it wouldnt work. Tried 2 other charges, tried usb, all in all ive tried 4 different chargers and nothing. I've blown into it, checked for dust and it still won't work.

I'm on 19% battery and getting desperate so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got the same battery icon with 2-3 red bars on an iPhone 4S. A picture for a charger port appears below. It disappears when I plug the phone in, but it doesn't charge and the phone does not turn on.

So after reading a few a lot of postings here suggesting the dock port is faulty or dirty, I cleaned the charging port and the cable plug with a bit of cleaning alcohol and a small toothbrush. After letting it sit for 5 minutes or so, I did a reset by holding home+power (this does not wipe your data), and the phone actually turned on. If you are unlucky your dock port might be too dirty or rusted and might have to be replaced.

Same problem as everyone else here, but I recently moved to Belize and there is no Apple store anywhere in the area, so don't know what to do at this point.

Really ****** me off that Apple has not even attempted to make any comments or replies to this thread, and that their products are becoming so cheap. I've had many other mobile phones that lasted for years (batteries too, and they were not the latest & greatest technologies either), and thios one is screwing up after just shy of two years, c'mon APPLE!!

We pay good money for this stuff, and all we get is 2 lousy years???? REALLY?!!

And seriously, how is it that it seems everyone is having the same problem right before an upgrade is due?

This is utterly rediculous.

Apple does not participate in this forum so they will never make any comments or replies to this thread. No use in getting ****** off.

If there were an Apple store in Belize you could easily get an out of warranty replacement. You should definitely try to get one through an authorized service center if there is one.

Have you tried any troubleshooting? Unless you have a hardware problem like some users have, perhaps you can solve your issue. I suggest you read the entire thread as some users have found a solution to their problems through different methods.

Hi, I started having this problem and it probably is a software issue for some reason. With my old iPhone, the battery would charge infrequently, 10% at one time, to 100% another. I took it to Apple and they suggested to either replace the battery since it was starting to decline or switch it with my other iPhone I had lying around. I charged that second iPhone with no problem, factory resetted. When I updated to iOS7 and put my backed up things on the second one, it had the same charging infrequency. A few days ago, it refused to charge at all so I let it die and tried to charge it, but it wouldn't recognize ANY charger I put in it or any outlet and didnt charge. I tried my computer as well and it didnt recognize it either. I wish I never bought this stupid iPhone, all they do is cause trouble.

I have an iPhone 4s with exactly the same issue. Just last week it started. For a couple days, it would max out at a 35-36% charge, but now it cannot even get off the ground. I have tried multiple Apple Charges and Cables, and currently have it connected to my iMac with iTunes open and it's hovering in and out of 1%.

Is there a forum that Apple DOES monitor and bother to particpate in?

Thank you!

My iPhone 4s has done the same thing over the weekend.

It was plugged in and displayed the charging symbol, but the battery % stayed the same overnight. The next day it regestered the charger, but did not charge and actually lost battery over time. Later that day it stopped acknowledging a charger out right.

I visited an Apple store and a 'Genius' looked into it for me. He told me "it is really weird...loads of people have been in recently with iPhone 4/4s that have started malfunctioning" - confirmed by this and the other threads.

They acknowledged my charger port was clean and undamaged "in great condition". They took it out back and opened it up, then came to report that there appeared to be absolutely nothing wrong with the phone internally. They did notice, however, that the water damage indicator inside, at the bottom of the headphone port had been activated. While I'm sure plenty claim this, I swear there is no way it could have water damage.

It would be interestng to know if anyone else's phone is displaying this?

I was told that my options were;

1) Pay c.£150 for a service - on a phone that when opened displayed no issues and which may not result in a working pgone afterwards....

or ( / then!)

2) Buy a new phone - convenient...

Reading the previous posts, taking into account the conincidental timing (being just over 2 years since the 4s was released, soon after the 5 has come out and a new software update) of these blatantly related issues and the suspicious appearance of a water damage indicator my conspirical bones are trembling......................

Hi,

Don't know if this will be helpful to anyone, but I have had similar problems getting my iPhone 4 to recognize some of my Apple chargers. I have found that if I insert the connector to the iPhone slowly (sometimes only pushing it in a very little bit), it will play the tone and then I can push it the rest of the way in and it charges with no problems.

Cheers,

Hi,

I have had the exact same problem - iPhone 4 that registers the charger is there but will not charge. I took it to a phone repair shop and they said that there was water damage indicated and by replacing the charging port it now works. I have no idea how it got water damaged, but they said any moisture would affect the port. I do not take it into the bathroom and it is charged in the hallway away from all bathrooms and kitchens.

It only cost £25 to replace the port from a non-apple franchise repairer, but it still should not have stopped working.

My iphone4 will not charge at all. I left it off, plugged in all night and nothing. It has been fully upgraded for the IOS 7. whatever it is. It was fine Sunday morning (1 day ago) after it had charged all night. Sunday morning it seemed to be using up the battery sort of fast. down to 49% in 3 hours of light use. I was going out so I plugged in the charger. Nothing. I tried 2 different cables, 3 different charge cubes, and 1 computer. Nothing. I cleaned the lint out of the port. Nothing. I tried the various button hold scenarios. Nothing. I am very irritated. I do not think I want another apple product. This stinks that Apple does not respond to help anyone here. If that is how they want to be they can pound sand. I'll take my money someplace else.

My iphone 4 that i bought around christmas time from a friend stopped charging in the middle of ther night a few days ago. I thought it was maybe because of the charger and went to school and used up all of the battery charge during the day, when i went to plug my phone in at night, as usual, it was an inconsistent charge so i brought it down to plug it into my computer. At this point it had died. I had to hold the charger in place for it to slowly charge back up to 5%, when it finially reached 5%, i tried sending a quick text but it died right away and when i tried holding the charger to it again, that wouldn't even work and it wouldn't charge at all. i'm so confused and i don't know what's wrong! any help?

Hi stacemonj,

Are you using a certified Apple charger?

Have you tried cleaning out the connection points on both the device, the charger cord, and the charger connector with a clean, soft toothbrush?

Have you tried resetting your device (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Home screen redisplays, see if it wil charge.

And BTW - if you are rechargning your device, and it is only at 5%, don't try to do anything on it....give it a chance to get a reasonalble charge before you start messing with it (like at least 25%)....
