iphone 5C screen cracked with no impact

I just bought an iphone 5C and had it sitting on a flat surface, not even touching it. I heard something looked down and the screen was cracked (3 hours after buying it). It was not dropped or impacted or under extreme heat, nothing, it just cracked, I think its poor design!

Anyone else have an issue with the screen?

I got my iPhone 5s on November 5th. I was walking a few days ago and between the time I left my left my house and got back my screen was cracked horizontally from one side to the other. The phone had never been dropped. I started with Verizon which was a joke. I made an appointment at the Genius Bar. Apple looked at it and immediately told me they would replace the phone at no cost They said manufacturing problems happen. I highly recommend going to Apple.

Just happened to me! I bought two 5C's this past Tuesday evening. Wednesday early evening one of the phones sponateously cracked when my daughter was texting. She was sitting on my bed, there was no impact. She heard a pop sound and a very subtle hairline crack ran from about midway down one side to near the home button but not all the way. I was so disappointed and upset. Now I feel this is a super fragile phone and I have to encase mine in a clunky protective case like a LifeProof. I am definitely getting her one. I have AppleCare+ and called them right away. They told me to bring it back to the store. Really? Of COURSE the store said no and told me to deal with the AppleCare+. I was pretty annoyed given this is Christmas time and the stores and parking situations are jammed. So today off to the Apple Store. Saturday. In the mall. Christmas time. You get the picture. There were the waits to deal with but the issue was whether I'd have to pay the $79 deductible or not. (I highly recommend getting it). Given there was no impact and it was spontaneous (they only thing I could think of was it had been outside in the cold for some time and as soon as she came inside she started texting. Cold to hot too fast? I doubt it but that is the only thing I could think of). Anyway they replaced it and did not make me pay the decuctable. I'm not sure what they would have done if I didn't have the AppleCare+. I have lost some comfort level with this phone though I still love playing with it.

Update - no parts are available from Apple or a third party. If you were to get it fixed it is 149.00 with Apple (maybe but the clerks aren't 100% about that), $99-180 third party. Apple will sell you a new phone for 275.00 as a "warranty" replacement even if you drop it.

Bottom line is don't buy the phone in the first place. If you did and you are here with a cracked screen for any reason you are out of luck.

The 5c is a great phone, not a piece of junk at all IMO but you do have to buy some sort of protective case for it. From what I'm seeing on posts this cracked screen issue occurs very quickly after it started being used. Not everyone has mentioned what kind of case they had it in. In our case it was the standard Apple rubbery case with the holes in the back. IMO all cell phone manufacturers should make phones that are durable under normal wear and tear and not need a special protective case OR if the phone is pretty much guaranteed to be damaged under normal wear and tear without one (not to include dropping) then the standard case should be included free. No brainer here IMO.

In this case, Apple, so far, is not acknowledging any problems with defects in design or screens but they seem to be replacing the phone entirely. On the Apple website it says they are rolling out repairs in store with parts to include screens so the option of paying for a part rather than the whole phone will be coming soon. However, in my case, I would have been mad at replacing the screen. We didn't do anything wrong, paid for the Applecare+, the screen just cracked. We had it 2 days. I wanted a new phone. Got it without an argument. Pretty irritated going in and very happy coming out with the way I was treated.

Add me to the list of broken glass without cause. iPhone 5C has been in an Otterbox since day 1 (Black Friday), 2 weeks out, it was sitting on a flat surface charging, it went 'ptink!' and the glass was cracked.

Local Genius bar had no information on this being a manufacturing defect, and so I'm stuck paying for a replacement screen on a phone less than 3 weeks old.

I'm really glad that some folks that have posted are getting their screens replaced at no charge, but unfortunately I'm not so lucky. I even put in a call higher up the food chain, and was still shot down. Not a real happy camper right now, unfortunately.

I went too sleep last nite with my iPhone 5c with everything in perfect shape. I wake up and there's a crack from the bottom of my screen to about halfway. It was glass side up and didn't move from its position at all and there's a crack. You may be saying this guy is crazy but unless I went into a rage sleep walked and broke my phone , it broke on its own.

Happened to my daughter. She was very upset because she just got her new phone (three weeks maybe) and never dropped it. She was holding it in her hand and all of a sudden she noticed a crack running down the middle (top to bottom) of the screen.

We have not brought it in to Apple yet because of the holidays but plan on doing it ASAP. There is definitely a problem with the screens and Apple needs to address it and replace the phones that have the problems.

While I was fuming and trying to decide if I was going to pay the $269 for Apple to swap the phone and hope for a refund down the road, wait for Apple to offer a cheaper repair in store like I have read about is coming, or get a third party to repair the glass, it finally occurred to me to try taking it back to Walmart for an exchange. By this point I was past their 15 day exchange window, but a few minutes with a manager there had me approved for a replacement, and I was out the door not long after with another new 5c.

I had it activated at the AT&T store across the way, and the rep there said that the 5c glass was much more fragile than the original 5. I really wish now I had bought my son a 5 instead of 5c, Walmart still had those available...
