My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

Hi Lex,

Thought I'd toss this in.

I upgraded my phone this afternoon. No longer have Motorola Droid Razr so I went into my Library to remove Motocast. I uninstalled it, went to empty the recycle bin and it said there were 4,099 files to delete in the recycle bin. All Motocast.

Your thoughts?

Is this something that I should maybe keep?

Thanks again,

Gen

Good !, please make a new etrecheck list for me.

Trash: It is not all Motocast probably, but there are always files that are removed from caches by the cleaning of OSX itself. But an app is more like a folder, there are lots and lots of files (like routines or so) inside on different levels. It may well be Motocast alone. To see for example in Finder go to an app in Applications, then CTL-click and choose "show contents" and so on and you see that an app is just a collection of files on different levels (be careful not to damage anything), and then there also invisible files.

If the Trash will not empy do a secure empty and after that logout then login in your account, (or the other way around, logout then in and then epmty trash).

Good evening,

I was able to get Motorola Support on Chat and they said it would simply take time for the files to be deleted. Take time it did, nearly two hours for the recycle bin to empty.

This machine is back to proper speed, no delays thank you so much!

Here's the latest etrecheck.

@brz4

Nothing serious in this list.

Some advice:

1. Uninstall Sleeptime.

2. Remove Bittorrent from SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/LoginItems , remove with the minus sign. You should start it when needed only, after that Quit (from the menu).

You know that torrent downloading can be illegal.

3. Java is not installed, so you can remove the Java plugin: In Finder go to Macintosh HD /Library/InternetPlugins folder and delete the JavaAppletPlugin

4. In Finder go to yourname /Library/LaunchAgents folder and delete com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-[...]@me.com-SharedServices.Agent.plist (this is one entry).

5. Empty the trash bin.

6. Make a backup plan (on a different disk).

7. Make a backup plan (on a different disk).

8. Make a backup plan (on a different disk).

and so on....

When you still have this "same issue" after this: it is not because of too less ram, nor too less space on disk.

Then you can do a SMC reset and a PRAM reset:

SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/ph4405

Well, here are a few thoughts:

1. Get rid of CleanMyMac ! Uninstall it. Does not do anything for you and interferes with OSX. It is even dangerous when you use some of the "cleaning" possibilities, like remove unused languages, and getting rid of parts of applications.

2. Uninstall Growl, Notifications in Mavericks are better.

3. Uninstall Macfuse.

4. Uninstall Chrome: a memory leaking app. Safari is safer and better.

5. It seems you do not have Java installed, so I suppose the Java Applet Plugin is a leftover:

In Finder go to Yourdisk (Meo) /Library/InternetPlugins and delete JavaAppletPlugin .

6. In Finder go to yourdisk /Library/LaunchDaemons and delete

com.adobe.SwitchBoard.plist

7. Restart, empty the Trash bin.

@mejotraju,

for 5 and 6 you probably looked in the Homefolder Library, you should go to the main Library:

click yourdisk (Macintosh HD) then you see a number of folders like System, Users, Skins... There also is a folder "Library", click that one open and you will find a folder "LaunchDaemons" and a folder "InternetPlug-ins" , these folders are not empty.

success,

Lex
