how do i play mp4 video files on mac mini?

I can't seem to get mp4 videos to play on my mac mini. i tried quicktime, vlc, elmedia player & real player.

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - 2 GB

Hmm, myself and the rest of the world can play standard MP4 on VLC....some other issue exists then. 😊
