Blocked Plug in on Youtube

I have an iMac and have been using Youtube without any problems until today. Tried to watch and error messgae 'Blocked Plug In' appears. Tired to down loaded the latest version of Flash and at stage 3 have the same message. Reading previous items, tried to change security setting by unchecking 'Allow Java' and nothing has changed. Any ideas?

What model iMac are you using, and what version of OS X is installed? Your question is in the PowerPC Discussions forum, so more information is needed to resolve that discrepancy first.

John,

Tried the HT5655 trail and could noy find the 'triple-click the line below to select it:

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins

Right-click or control-click the highlighted text and select'

When I go onto YouTube, I am getting stuck as soon as I enter the site with 'Blocked Plug In'. In addition when I go to the Adobe site to down, the error message pops up at the third step.

Infuriating as You Tube was working perfectly fine the day befor yesterday.

All assistance to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated

Thanks. I am using an iMac running OS X 10.6.8, unfortunately I can't duplicate the problem because I never installed any version of Flash Player that would be blocked.

I suggest the following:

First, uninstall your existing, blocked version of Flash Player:

Go to Adobe's website: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html#main_1 0_4

Download the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller for Mac OS X, version 10.6 and later .dmg file.

Follow all the remaining instructions on that page including verification of a successful uninstallation at the end.

Then, install the latest version of Flash Player:

Go to Adobe's website: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and click the yellow Download Now button.

When it finishes downloading close that page. The yellow Next button simply takes you to an advertisement.

Open the Flash Player Installer .dmg file - it's in the same Downloads folder as the uninstaller. Open the red Install Adobe Flash Player and follow the same procedures that you followed for its uninstaller above. When the progress indicator finishes, I recommend that you select the "Notify me to install updates" option so that you remain aware of whatever Adobe proposes to do with your Mac in the future. Click Done.

To verify its installation click Safari's Help menu > Installed Plug-ins and scroll to the end. The plugin Shockwave Flash 11.9 r900 — from file "Flash Player.plugin" should be present.

Determine if that fixes the blocked plug-in problem.

Sorry to bother you again but having uninstalled and then reinstalled Flash Player I have been able to view some content on YouTube. However a number of the links comes up with the message 'The Adobe Flash Player is required for video playback. Get the latest Flash Player' I have clicked on this link that has taken me to teh Adboe site, downloaded the application again and still teh same thing happens. Any ideas to ensure that I can access content without this problem?

Thanks,

Don't download Adobe Flash Player from any source other than the link above. Go to Adobe's website by navigating there on your own, and never with a button that appears on a website, video, or popup window. Downloading it directly from Adobe will ensure you are using the latest Flash Player version, and any website, video, or popup claiming otherwise should be ignored.

Go to your Mac's  (Apple menu) > System Preferences and select the Flash Player pane. Click the Advanced tab, and under Browser Data and Settings click Delete All... Select the box for Delete All Site Data and Settings then click the Delete Data button.

If you are using Safari, reset Safari. Make it look like this:

User uploaded file

Edit to add: if you have no Flash Player preference pane in System Preferences, or a Reset Safari menu option in Safari, let me know what Safari version you are using and write back for directions.

Determine if the prompts download Flash from certain websites persist. If they do, further troubleshooting may be warranted, but your first suspicion should be that prompts are either attempts to deceive you into installing something that is not Adobe Flash Player or the video's site may be misinterpreting the version that is acutally installed.

John, I have just tried YouTube again and when accessing this URL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1MqCpD4fOY I have the message about downloading Flash Player.

For the next URL I can access the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWLhrHVySgA

For this site I just get a blank screen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT_nvWreIhg&list=TLoiZTcA4ftU7QPmeh0Fjw4ushBB3p76 t6

A bit of a mystery!

Using identical Flash Player, OS X, and Safari versions, I am unable to duplicate the problem. Something else is going on.

More information would help. Consider the following:

Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:

User uploaded file

Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.

It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.

Copy and paste its output in a reply.

Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".

EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.

When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

Thanks. There is no Flash Player plugin appearing for Safari, and there ought to be.

Your EtreCheck output should include the following:

3rd Party Preference Panes:

Flash Player

Internet Plug-ins:

Flash Player.plugin

FlashPlayer-10.6.plugin

First, make sure that plugins are enabled in Safari: go to Safari's Preferences... menu and select Security. Verify the box for Internet plug-ins is selected. If it is, go to Safari's Help menu and select Installed Plug-ins. Scroll to the end and look for the plugin Shockwave Flash 11.9 r900 — from file "Flash Player.plugin" as in the following screenshot:

User uploaded file

If it is not appearing, return to the Adobe page linked in my earlier response, download and install it again.

If it still does not appear, return to Safari's Preferences menu and select Extensions. If any are installed, please describe them. Then, toggle the "on/off" slider to "off" and determine if that results in any change.

If you reached this point, return to Safari's Preferences menu and select Privacy. Click the button Remove All Website Data... confirm the dialog, and re-test.

Finally, go to your  (Apple) menu and select System Preferences. Check for the presence of a Flash Player preference pane. If it appears, click the Advanced tab and under Browsing Data and Settings, click the Delete All... button, check the box for Delete All Site Data and Settings, click the Delete Data button, and re-test.

If after exhausting all these steps you still get the Blocked Plug-In button, run EtreCheck again and post the results in a reply.

Hi John,

I have tried your suggestions and report back as follows:-

Checked and confirm that plugins are enabled in Safari but Shockwave Flash 11.9 r900 — from file "Flash Player.plugin" did not appear

Went to Adobe website to downlaod Flash Player and went through the three steps and then gave me the adobe screen. Went to YouTube and opened one video successfully. Tried another and the message 'Flash Player needs to be installed'. Went to try another and the orignal video played again.

Tried extension and nothing shown as installed

Clicked Provacy and removed all website data

Tried  (Apple) menu and select System Preferences. Check for the presence of a Flash Player preference pane - did not appear

I sometimes see the Blocked Plug in as a 'ghost on the screen on other websites, but the only message I can see in YouTube is 'Requires Flash Player'
