Need help changing software priorities and other

1. How do I get screen shots to automatically be jpeg and Photoshop format not preview and png? Is there a way to specify a folder, for screen shots, to go in when first snapped (and not on desktop)?

Preview Icons only show actual picture thumbnail icons on desktop, once in a folder, they turn back into the generic Preview icon..why is that and is there a way to make all preview pngs have picture icons (Icons of the picture that is the file)?

2. How do I get txt. doc. rtf and other wp files to automatically open MSW?

3. How do I get Safari to open PDF in Adobe Reader/Acrobat?

4. How do I get PDF's to automatically be Adobe format and not Preview?

5. If I go to install an app that is not 10.4 compliant (unknowingly of course) what will happen? Will it tell me its not compliant (like OS 9) or will it go ahead and install it?

6. I unchecked all the foreign languages (under get info, language sub category) of applications, is this going to cause any problems?

Sorry for all the questions, but since they are somewhat relative to on another, I thought it's be ok to post them together.

Thank you in advance,
Deb

Let's see how many I can answer off the top of my head in a hurry before I shut the home computers down before the approaching thunderstorm reaches overhead 🙂

2 & 4: find one of the desired files on the desktop, Get Info, expand the Open With tab in the Info window, browse to the desired application if it's not listed under "Other", select that, and click on 'Always open with'

5. Depends on the application; some are written to check the installed OS version and quit or warn you if the version number doesn't meet a minimum requirement, others with just install away without checking a thing.

6. Turning off foreign languages should only be a problem if you suddenly find a need to write a paper in Mandarian (a lot of people use Monolingual to remove unneeded foreighn langiages entirely; that can save about 1 GB of disk space from a full Tiger install).

Deb,

If your account is an admin accout then you should be able to access any of the files tht Preferential treatment flagged earlier as troublesome. It occurs to me that it's been a while since I ran Preferential Treatment myself; unfortunately I'm on the wrong computer to check that at the moment. I'll run a check later to confirm there's no bug in PrefTreat, but I haven't seen any reports of it's latest version being buggy.

Do a Get Info one one of the files that Preferential Treatment earlier told you you couldn't access because they were owned by root (e.g. /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/ActiveDirectory.plist) and expand the Ownership & Permissions tab at the bottom of the Get Info window. What name is shown as the owner? I'd expect to see "system" or your user account short name, dependiong on what kind of preference .plist you check.

How long ago did you last run Disk Utility> Repair Permissions?

Did you or anyone in your family set up the "Nascaracsan" or "Standard" user accounts? Note that there's no such thing as a built-in "Standard" user. Perhqaps someone set that up as a non-Admin (thinking 'standard') account for testing. I'm concerned if whomever did the repairs on your Mac did things like enabling root user and installing user accounts that have no real business being there. Back to the question about whether your Mac automatically logs on to your account: I'm guessing it does, since you didn't mention the other two accounts before. If you uncheck the "automatically log in" option and log out, does the list of names in the log in name box include "Other..."? That would confirm the root account is enabled. Or open Applications> Utilities> NetInfo Manager, unlock it, and go to the Security menu and see if "Disable Root User" is enabled or inactive. You can look over "how to disable the root user" in Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X (from which I just cribbed the tip on using NetInfo Manager to check if root is enabled or not).

Heres what I have so far

Just ran permission verify..everything ok

Yes I setup Nas account don't remember how or when, but I think I did it for testing purposes. But it says right under the Nas name "standard" and under mine is admin.

Ok this plist==== ActiveDirectory.plist== says I have no access (via get info) Owner is system read & write .....group is admin no access

They all have the same permissions as above...and get this....they are all in the DIRECTORYSERVICE folder in Library/Preferences. They are the only 7 plists in there.

I tried unlocking it and changing access but can only change the owner or group.not the access. When I tried to change owner..it asked for pw...I entered it and it will change to my deblee acct...but wont stay..it keeps switching back to system...even after I locked it deblee as owner.

I uncheck auto login...logged out and only the two names deblee and nas came up as log back in choices.

Ok this is new...when i went to unlock netinfo....an authentication window came that said "You need an administrator's short name and password to makes changes for domain:/" never seen that type of auth before. Name in there now is deblee not Deb Lee like it normally is.

Thanks for your help,
Deb

Ownership of permissions in those directories is indeed the system and you even as admin user normally would have no access mine says owner is System, Group is admin with no access). You can safely ignore Preferential Treatment flagging those system-level preferences (hmm... one of us should send a e-mail to the utility's programmer to point out the strong potential for confusion in the wording there). It sounds as if you have the permissions working, actually; don't try to change the permissions in the System folder unless something is actually wrong. An all-clear from repair Permissions should be good enough.

That you created the Nasacar user account for testing is great; it says the shop didn't do anything untoward with the accounts.
