I too am getting the "Moving calendars to server account" pane when I open iCal

I too am getting the "Moving calendars to server account" pane when I open iCal. All fixes I have read seem to involve turning iCal off an on and/or rebooting. I cannot touch iCal. All is grayed out in iCal and in iCloud system preferences. I am using 10.8.5 and iCal version ... Well, that is grayed out too. Waiting a really long time does not seem to help.

Thanks Melisloaris. BUT . . . your fix assumes "3. you should already have the most up-to-date copy on your iCloud.". Unfortunately - like so many others here - this was first time I used iCloud as i have done manual back up thru iTunes for years. If I log into icloud account it shows only SOME items have backed up, so if I do as you say, I will lose about 20 years of calendar items.

Clearly I am obliged to use icloud to do my back up/sync now (grr!), but I am afraid that if I follow your instructions to stop the dreadful/eternal "moving calendars to Server" I must sacrifice my entire life's events by accepting "yes" after "3. It'll ask if you want to delete the calendar and reminder events from your computer.".

My question? Do you have any way to fix the problem of "moving calendars to Server" without losing all my old calendars - which are manifestly NOT on iCloud? heeeellllp!

Hi melisolaris,

Great fix. Like Doc Shakespeare, I'd hate to lose years of calendars. However, I think importing the local calendar to iCloud (in order to prevent losing calendars when deleting them from your computer) won't work while the 'moving calendars to servers' message is showing. Not sure if this is a problem unique to me but I can't select the 'Import' option in iCal while that message is showing, it's simply faded and cannot be selected. Any idea?

Hey all, I had the same problem. Everyone seemed to have different solutions that worked for them--but not for me 😟. Here's what actually fixed my problem.

1. Force quit iCal and Reminders.

2. On your computer, unlink Calendars and Reminders from iCloud:

> System Preferences > iCloud > Uncheck Calendars AND Reminders

(I did this because my Reminders uses my Calenders; I set deadlines for reminders, etc. Also, because my reminders weren't syncing with my iCloud as they should.)

3. It'll ask if you want to delete the calendar and reminder events from your computer. Say yes because you should already have the most up-to-date copy on your iCloud.

4. Open iCal. It should no longer display the "moving calendars to server account" message.

5. Add your iCloud account to iCal.

> Calendar > Add Account... > iCloud > Sign in with Apple ID and PW

6. Give it a minute to update. You should see all your iCloud calendar events with no error message.

7. Quit iCal. Open Reminders.

8. Add your iCloud account to Reminders.

> Reminders > Add Account... > iCloud > Sign in with Apple ID and PW

9. Test the two programs by adding test events and reminders to see if they show up on your iPhone and your Macbook.

It worked for me! 🙂

Hope this helps you!

Currently running: OS X Mavericks

Thank you! This solution worked for me. At first it shows Calendar is "updating" up in the menu bar of the app window itself, then the dreaded "Moving calendar to server account" came up again, but after about a minute it closed and all was well. All events there.

One more Mavericks issue solved....

How do I know if I have backed up my iCal calendars to iCloud? My System Preference for iCloud says this:

User uploaded file

Mavericks is my first experience with the cloud, so I do not know if 0.01 GB is enough to hold everything that I want backed up. I feel apprehensive about unlinking and deleting my calendars if I don't know for sure that they are in the cloud.
