iOS Simulator vs Actual device

So it seems like the Apple technicians test your apps before posting on App Store....

If I am planning on making apps for all iOS devices, including iPhone, iPad and iPad mini, do I have to have all of them?

I mean do I have to purchase every version of all the Apple products to ensure apps should operate?

Or should iOS Simulator + Apple's checks + maybe test run on iPhone be good enough for app iOS devices.

I know iPhone wouldn't be same as iPad but can I just check if the app works or not then submit it so that they can do the testing for resolutions and stuff?

Thanks.

If you don't test on the actual device you want to support, you could have a problem and your users will certainly let the world know.

I develop for iPad only currently.

I have each of the iPads going back to the original iPad including one iPad mini.

Some are Wi-Fi only, others are Cellular.

Most are 16GB which is fine for development.

Doing iOS development properly isn't cheap but I consider this like insurance; I'm very certain I'll get no surprises when someone runs my apps on an iPad as I shall have tested on each and every version.

If you think this is excessive, try testing ALL the possible devices running the Android OS. Well over 30,000 and counting.

See Testing and Debugging in iOS Simulator

And remember, while you may or may not need every variation of every device your app claims to support for actual testing, your users don't work with the simulator, so if you don't test on a device, you're asking them to do that for you - expect negative reviews if things aren't smooth...

I keep at least four devices handy, and if I need more, I have a pool of nearly a dozen I can pull from - testflightapp.com/ is one option if you need help.
