How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Is there anyone who has tested it under OSX 10.8.x and can confirm that the INFO is still there?

Simple answer is YES 🙂

I would add that I have yet to update to iTunes 11.1.3, if anyone can confirm that the INFO tab is still available in this update when applied to OS X 10.8, it would be helpful.

🙂

Then how on Earth can you confirm it???? 😕

Hi everyone,

I will sign of now, my inbox is full. I will finish with a slightly modified repost from page 15.

Cause is the removal of the "sync services" framework in the new OS X Mavericks.

Effects:

Sync services was used by iTunes to synchronize calendars, contacts, (and in the far past notes and reminders), between iOS devices and Macs, if these were not set to sync via iCloud. This sync happened during the iTunes sync over USB or local Wifi. With the removal of sync services, iTunes can no longer do this and users have to fall back to iCloud or other cloud services.

Problems:

Opinions voiced mention the following:

  1. Don't want that private information in the Cloud for for fear of hacks and abuse
  2. Loss of control over safety of data, server errors happen (see Amazon), and Apple will hardly pay damages. If my Mac dies and I didn't back up correctly, that is my responsibility.
  3. Fear of government intrusions
  4. iPhone 3G, original iPad and iPod touch 2G do not support iCloud and are now disconnected regarding contacts and calendar
  5. Legal issues concerning EU customers when storing business/client/patient/student data on non-EU servers.
  6. On the go with Laptop and iOS, only the latter may have internet access and they can't sync.
  7. Data consumption of iCloud (it once burned through my entire 300MB plan in two weeks, before I turned it off)

Solutions:

  1. Contact Apple through http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html in the hope of getting sync services back, one can hope ;(
  2. Search for THE petition to get local sync back
  3. Give feedback to your local government or NGOs regarding privacy in the cloud
  4. Use an alternative cloud service (Google, etc.) for unsupported devices
  5. Set up your own server in the home network
    1. OSX Server
    2. ownCloud
    3. open source CalDAV and CardDAV servers
  6. Revert to OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion (Warning: iTunes 12 will come eventually and may not support sync services anymore)
  7. Use iTunes in Windows (same warning: iTunes 12 will come eventually and may not support sync services anymore)
  8. Hope for a 3rd party solution, that will probably only work with devices that are "liberated prisoners"
  9. Pen and Paper
  10. give up and use iCloud
  11. Deal with it

I recently did 1,2,3, and since I don't think Apple gives an "aviating intercourse" or a "vermin's behind" about that feedback or it's customers, I won't get my hopes up and go to solution 5.1 for ease of setup in about a month or so.

Thank you for an interesting discussion (at times).

As I previously wrote, I just downgraded back to Mountain Lion restoring the CCC bootable backup I'd made prior to installing Mavericks, and this went fine with me.

But I just wished to mention an alternate possibility: there are some third party softwares that enable you to extract calendars and contacts from iPhone backups made in iTunes. Then, all you have to do is save the results to iCal and Contacts...The software I have is called Mobile Sync Browser. I haven't tried the software in Mavericks, though, but if someone wishes to check...

Hoping this may help, good luck!

I installed Mavericks without a warning that the calendar and contact sync with my iphones is not working further, unbelievable!

I don´t use iCloud for my data and I don´t want to use it.

2 Questions:

Why apple don´t warn before cutting an elemantary function before the update? and

How can I now going back without loosing the data since the last TM Backup and wasting so much time to work it out per hand?

My hope was the complete WLAN-Sync for all data.

It´s a shame.

You installed a new operating system without bothering to find out if there would be compatibility or other issues that would affect you before hand, unbelievable!

The feature was depracated 2 versions ago! It's not Apple's fault you didn't bother to check this before you updated.

That's already been covered. Read the thread.

I just got back from the Apple store with this exact issue. I am a licensed psychologist, and iCloud is not an option since they do not comply with security rules for medical records. They had no solution for me, and they said I was the first one to raise the issue. My PC still syncs fine. Brendan

That's because Apple cares about Windows users.

I updated today, and info button disappeard. I went to Apple store, and they said it was removed so everyone would use iCloud. I left.

Just trying to get a complete and correct answer ...

You updated what? iTunes to version 11.1.3 ... or ... OSX to version 10.9?

Still looking for the confirmation ...

Is there anyone who has tested iTunes 11.1.3 under OSX 10.8.x and can confirm that the INFO button is still there?
