How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option.

I read that OS X Mavericks will no longer allow me to use iTunes to sync my iPhone to a local system but makes iCloud mandatory? Is that correct?

iCloud is not a valid option for me since I have no control about my data there, I need to keep all my data (contacts, calendar...) on a system under my control and so far iTunes allowed me to do that which was one of the reasons I didn't even consider Android or Windows Phone.

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I'm having a similar issue. Since the upgrade to Mavericks and iTunes 11.1.2, I'm still able to locally sync my iPhone with my Macbook Pro's music/photos/movies/etc. via wifi and USB cable, but not my contacts or my calendars (I use the Mac apps Contacts and Calendar for both of these), which seemed kind of...illogical? There was no need to take away the Info tab feature in iTunes under Devices, because there is no need to back up different portions of my info across two different mediums (i.e. iCloud and my Mac.) I understand that iCloud is useful for some people, but it's just not a feature I would like to use (especially since the first time I tried it out, it proceeded to delete all of the contacts from my phone.) What's strange is that no one at Apple Support knew very much about Mavericks' new features, and couldn't tell me why any of my issues were happening. I'm hoping it's just a bug that the engineers and developers will fix. I just want my Info tab back, and I want to be able to sync all of my information from one, localized source that I trust: my Mac.

If you're not using the icloud with your NSA account and still want to sync notes locally, you can use an app called "Write2" There are other note apps out there with this function as well.

You can't sync locally but you can backup locally by going to the APPS section of your iphone menu in Itunes, Save the write folder to your computer and there you have it.

It's not a sync. It's only locally backed up notes old school style like it's 2002 again!

You can sync your address book locally by turning dictation on in your system preferences and get Siri to read the whole address book to your mac and save it as a text file. 🙂

It is amazing to me there is not an App to sync my contacts to my computer. I use Photosync for my photos. Isnt there an app that will do that? I see many but they are not explained very well. I need to get my new numbers off my phone and using a pencil and paper is really dumb and the Cloud is not an option

Too scary and time consuming to go back to Lion, if something goes wrong there goes my computer. I have a 27 iMac and was considering a new top of the line computer system but with maverick thats not an option

I am really looking at an S4 system becasue of this.

I feel your pain; not ever going to be uploading my Contacts to anybody else's cloud.

iTunes contacts sync gone... much sadness.

Download Mavericks OS/X Server 3.0, set up your own CardDAV, CalDAV, etc., PRESTO! There they are. Problem solved.

It ... Just Works <gasp>. Being a *nix geek isn't a requirement, OS/X server is shiny, and pretty, and contains many buttons to PuSh (along with helpful suggestions).

As we were instructed, these forum discussions apparently not the right places for voicing our dissatisfaction, the recommended place is to provide feedback under the Contact section, but even better is to provide a rating and a review in the App Store. I encourage you all to voice your opinions there. Apple pays more attention to those.

I tried that and of course you can only comment, post a review of the product - Mavericks if you've purchased it. I haven't done that, at 5+ Gb its a bit beyond my capacity at the moment and in any case I won't be purchasing it until we get local sync back.

Perhaps other forums will take up the flag and spread this issue around, I've already posted a warning on my Facebook page to friends and family to avoid Mavericks if they want to keep local syncing working.

I also just got this when I tried to view other discussions on this topic:

It appears you're not allowed to view what you requested. You might contact your administrator if you think this is a mistake.

I too was looking at purchasing a new Retina 13" with 10.9 until I saw the article about disabling of local sync. While I do use Notes on iCloud, Calendar on Google, Contacts and legacy calendars were local. I wonder how I'm suppose to send my old calendars to my iPhone on 10.9. Suffice to say, I've put my potential purchase on hold and will not be upgrading...perhaps Apple will allow this local sync feature if enough people voice? Is posting in this forum sufficient for that?

Yet trolls are allowed.

If what you say is true I don't get why and just how much control Apple has over discussion.

It IS important to vent feelings about issues that effect us, effect usability.

There are other forums, but this one is important because its run by Apple for Apple users.

I feel really hurt that Apple has seen fit to impose usability methods on users, on me.

I've been an Apple user for 30 years, love the gear and interface.

I don't like bullying and I feel like I'm being bullied, ignored, patronised.

Some users don't mind being forced to use iCloud, but thats not my choice.

I am with you. There is a pont to stay on topic in these tech forums as otherwise it will become very hard to find a tech solution....however Apple clearly does not like and therefore does not provide a platform where users can discuss user experience relatef topics in public. Apple is changing and starts behaving like a BIG corporation. Do you recall how '1984 won't be like 1984'? Well it is slowly turning into 1984....

But now email account information and all of my contacts' names, nicknames, numbers, emails, home and work addresses, and birth-dates as well? Well that sounds like a massive security car-crash just waiting to happen.

But most, if not all, of that data is publicly available, albeit perhaps with some digging. If I kept extensive notes connected to contacts that might be problematic, I suppose.

Obviously, everyone needs to determine their own level of comfort on the internet. I'm not suggesting that anyone's request for tethered syncing is wrong.

Best of luck.

So, here is what I did: I bought the OS X Server and run a local Calendar and Contacts server.

I switched all my iOS devices and OS X Calendar and Contacts application config to that server in the local network. And I exported my contacts and calendar entries from the local store in OS X to a file and then reimported them to the server store using the same OS X client applications. Now my devices are in sync again and should keep automatically synced whenever I am home an the Mac is running.

One more question...

Are you running server under Mavericks or Mountain Lion (or previous)?

Thanks,

Andy

I'm running the Server on Mavericks. On the same MacBook Pro I use for syncing Music, Videos and the rest and for the backup through iTunes.

Experiences were good so far. If I'm underway or on a WLAN at work, the devices behave like before. Each iOS device has its own calendar and contact list. When I'm home and the iOS devices and the MacBook are all running, it syncs all devices to the servers.

Conficts (e.g. change the name of an appointment on multiple devices independently) seem to be handled worse than by the iTunes local sync. iTunes popped up a dialog which showed all conflicting changes and let you decide. The server just takes any of those changes and ignores and overwrites the rest. You won't be informed about a conflict.
