Apple Keyboard won't pair with new Windows 8.1 update

I just updated to Windows 8.1 on my PC last night. I made sure my IOGear bluetooth dongle has the latest driver. Windows Bluetooth settings see the keyboard but when I click "Pair" it soon says "That didn't work" and gives me an option to try again. It fails everytime.

I've checked for more updates and restarted a few times too.

I've been using the Apple keyboard happily with Windows 8.0 for at least a year.

Please advise; I thought there'd be many with this issue with the new W8.1 update but I can't find anyone else discussing it.

On a side note I put my keybard serial number into the Apple support system and it says "The serial number entered in this request is not valid." Not sure why; I guess it's just no longer supported?

Hi I am too facing this issue.

I have searched hi and low to try and resolve issue, both the magic mouse and wireless keyboard worked fine on my old windows 7 machine.

Now new windows 8.1 machine (with different bluetooth) no joy.

Numerous restarts, driver switches, nothing helps :-(

I can get them to connect for a little, but they do not work (no input works)

* On Mouse - it finds, connects and pairs, then connection is lost and device no longer appears in windows bluetooth list.

* On Keyboard - but then connection is lost and the keyboard never connects again, I have to delete and re-find and pair to connect again

Has anyone managed to get windows 8.1 to work with

- apple magic mouse

- apple wireless keyboard

what tricks did you use to get them to

a) pair

b) stay connected.

many thanks

I've tried everything and it will not work. I've also contacted an apple "Genius" a number of times, nothing works and they have no knowledge of how bootcamp works nor do they spend enough time to make sure that the problem is fixed. Very frustrated. Total waste of time and money. Autodesk, please make autocad and revit work on a mac so I don't have to work in windows!!!!!! Apple get it together and make autodesk produce a mac compatible version of autocad and revit!!!

I'm gonna post this after 2 days of hunting a solution to the same issue in case it helps others ... Here's the sequence that worked for me!

  1. Go to PC and Devices -> Bluetooth in Windows 8.1
  2. Turn on the keyboard, and HOLD the power button. Do NOT let go until step 7.
  3. Your keyboard should now appear in the assistant (and LED flashing on keyboard).
  4. Select the keyboard from the list and click Continue, while still holding the power button.
  5. Once you get the pairing code, let go of the power button and type in the code.

There is no need to unpair the keyboard with anything (I couldn't anyway as I didn't have access to all the devices the keyboard is paired with), the crucial bit was actually holding down the power button.

Unbelievable! 🙂

Now to try and pair my Apple Magic Trackpad...

So I feel as though I've become a bit of a guru at this issue since my magic keyboard seems to get kicked off just about every round of updates for a few months now. However, it seems everyone has their own system for getting it to work, so I wont say this is a fool-proof solution:

Disclaimer: This has only worked for me after having successfully installed the keyboard on the OS previously; my bet is that most of these posts are in the same boat, and that this issue is the result of the Bluetooth driver picking up a present signal when Windows 8.1 doesn't (since my keyboard driver shows up in device manager even after I've "forgotten this device" in PC settings.

1. Turn off your Bluetooth keyboard by holding the power button until the light turns off. In the name of good tech-support I'll also say that if the keyboard was already off, then you will see the light come on and then start to blink. This is pairing mode for those who did no already know.

2. As many have said, uninstall the Bluetooth driver in Device Manager (either under Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and printers > Device Manager; or Ctrl + X > Device Manager) by opening the drop-down menu under "Bluetooth" and right-clicking the Apple Broadcom Built-in Bluetooth. Also uninstall the keyboard's Bluetooth driver if it happens to show up in the list.

***This may automatically re-install, but it did not disrupt the process for me***

3. Restart the computer, leaving the Bluetooth keyboard turned off.

4. Go to Bluetooth in PC settings (either by right clicking the Bluetooth icon in your toolbar and selecting "Show Bluetooth Devices" or under Ctrl + C > Settings > Change PC Settings > Bluetooth).

5. Hold the power button on your Bluetooth keyboard until the light begins to blink for pairing mode.

***It was at this point during my attempt that my keyboard automatically showed up as paired and began to work properly***

6. If your device had been successfully uninstalled from Windows previously, you may have to re-pair by clicking on the keyboard and then "Pair" while your keyboard's light is blinking. You should be prompted to enter a serial or to press a series of numbers followed by the enter/return button.

If this works for just one more person I'll be satisfied for having posted this. It's been driving me crazy and I always forget how I got it to work the time before.

How can I edit my own answer? Grr.

I discovered that if I use the old Control Panel to add the bluetooth device, the menu looked different and there was a small blue text link I could click on to show the pairing code, which did make the keyboard work again.

Oh, and I also removed the Bluetooth driver from the device manager (and had it immediately reinstall itself automatically) and stopped and started the bluetooth discovery service in the service manager.
