iPhone 5S restarting itself

Anyone else having their 5S sporatically restarting itself? So far, there seems to be no pattern, other that I'm usually playing a word game on it when it happens.

Ditto on the Touch ID problems and sporadic restarts after using the fingerprint to unlock. I am on my second iPhone 5s after Apple replaced the first one for the mentioned issues. I started with a fresh setup on the new one (I did NOT use "restore" from iTunes) and manually re-added my Apps back from iTunes/App store and I still have this problem. I don't think another full restore will fix the problem. I am on 7.0.4, and still experiencing the problem. I believe there is a significant flaw in the software and/or combination of some hardware issues possibly on certain phones. This is not happening to everyone as I have a few friends with 5s phones and have never experienced the issue.

I notice the that restart seems to occur most often if I immediately try to go into an app after unlocking (e.g. I receive a text message, so I unlock and try and go into Messages to read right away, and it restarts). If I pause a few seconds after unlocking and then launch an app, I seem to have better results. But it is still a pain the rear when this happens. I am also now having the reboots happen for no reason when using the phone.

My Touch ID and Passcode settings are as follows (maybe there is something consistent in our settings that can determine why it happens to us and nother others):

  • Require Passcode: immediately
  • Simple Pascode is turned off (I used a stronger passcode)
  • Touch ID - iPhone unlock (enabled), iTunes and App Store (disabled). I have 4 fingerprints registered.
  • Voice Dial - On
  • Siri, Passbook, Reply with Message - all allow access when locked
  • Erase Data - disabled

I hope there is a fix sometime soon for this.

One additional thought, and someone may have discussed this already. I am using a Complex passcode (not just 4 digits (Simple Passcode is Off under Touch ID & Passcode settings).

I checked with 3 friends who are NOT experiencing the random restart problem on their 5s phones, and each of them are using the Simple 4 digit Passcode.

I experience about 3-4 restarts per week. I'm on 7.0.4, simple passcode, not using touch ID for unlock, but using touch ID for iTunes purchases. I've done the iCloud restore to transfer from my iphone 4, to 4S, to 5, to now the 5S, with lots of old text messages. I keep a lot of windows open in safari and I seem to notice reboots when switching between safari windows.

My month-old 5S started restarting today. It's pretty bad, been restarting and shutting down constantly for the past few hours.

I go to the phone and it has shutdown.

I start it up.

White screen and black apple logo.

This flashes black for a split second - looks broken.

It then shows a black screen with a spinner for what seems like an age.

It then makes it to the unlock screen.

I unlock the phone.

10-20 mins later I go back to the phone and its either at the white screen with the apple logo, or its has shutoff.

It has finally stayed up long enough to do a backup.

This started happening after I turned off the passcode lock, then put it back on, deleted the fingerprints and added 4 new ones (the old ones didn't seem to work too well since the last update). For the record, i use the simple 4-digit passcode and have 4 fingerprints (i used to have 3).

I'm going to try and get some logs, and try a few things out. If it doesn't fix it, I'll be sourcing a replacement.

Eeek. Crash logs from xcode show CommsCentre crashing every 20 seconds or so :/

I sent the crash logs to apple over chat support, but if any engineers are watching this thread here is the common crash:

Hello,

Also having problems with the iPhone 5s restarting. I disabled the fingerprint scan and it's been five days now and the phone has not restarted itself. Apple needs an iOS update to correct this issue. Anyone else has any suggestions on how to make this work I'd appreciate it. I did a hard soft reset, did a back up restore, reset to factory settings, also set up as new. Also when deleting text messages the text messages save under general usage with no text messages showing up in messages taking up too much space!! Apple also needs to correct this! How's BlackBerry is it any better than Apple!! Had an iPhone for many many years this is the first one with so many issues.

FIXED!? Okay. I contacted apple. We went thru a few things in chat. Here is what I did (2 weeks no self resets). He had me go to settings, reset, reset all settings. It was a REAL pain in the butt because I lost all my ring tones, backgrounds, and other personalized settings. So I had to figure them all out again. Bc he did NOT want me to restore from icloud. HOWEVER, it wasn't too bad bc I kept my apps, data, and music.... So give it a try it might work for you too. And once you get all ur settings back to where u like them create a new fresh backup. Hopefully without the glitch.

Hello All,

I have been having random short re-starts as well.

My first phone was swapped for the issue along with a volume button issue and the 2nd unit shows random restarts which is annoying and upsetting.

Resets and Recovery mode iOS clean install, setting phone as new etc did not work.

I have disabled touch ID and have not seen a restart the last 2 days.

Along with it I have disabled background app refreshes, have been killing open apps regularly and been trying games and music and multi tasking every now and then and the 5S seem to be holding on without the short restarts. Disabling touch id seem to be working as of now, atleast that is what I am hoping.

Hope this information helps others having similar issues.

I am hoping Apple comes out with a iOS update soon for the issue and hoping it gets resolved.

Will update on testing the phone with Touch ID off for the next couple of days.

My 5S is working fine now, no restarts over the past few days. Seems mine was tied to a broken app install. I was able to get the device stable enough to do a backup, and then restored that same backup onto the phone and everything has been fine.

I suspect it was due to an in-development app that had got into a broken state. I couldn't delete it through xcode (just got an error), and the icon wasn't showing on the actual device so no way to delete the app there. The restore doesn't restore development apps so it cleared the broken app and now all is well. Curious how an app can get into a state that would take the whole OS down though.

I seems my base issue was different to others here however.
