iPhone 5S restarting itself
Anyone else having their 5S sporatically restarting itself? So far, there seems to be no pattern, other that I'm usually playing a word game on it when it happens.

You mean TURN ON reduce motion right? Because by default it's already off.
No, I mean turn off. I had turned reduced motion on because I'm not a fan of all the zooming in and out. Turning reduced motion back off seemed to fix the issue at least for me.
This is in reply to Georgialawchick - Thanks for the tip! Turning off "reduced motion" seemed to fix the restart issues for me at least for the past 3 days, which is the longest I have gone without restarts. I too turned on "reduced motion" (within Accessibility settings area) as I didn't like all the zoom in/out features, and I was trying to conserve battery life as I seemed to have better battery experience without all the animated backgrounds and motion features. Hopefully Apple can fix this bug as it is quite annoying as can be seen all the replies in this forum.
This is all nonsense. I have restored, turned off motion, and still get random restarts. there is no pattern to them. most happen in the springboard when switching apps, somethimes in the camera, and sometimes for no reason at all. It can't be the fingerprint, because my iPad 3 restarts. restoring didn't help either.
Its embarassing. possibly the worst software bug i have encountered in iOS
I can tell you that I had significantly more restarts when I had Reduced Motion turn on. I turned it off (default setting) and had fewer restarts. I tried turning it on again to see if that was really the problem and had more restarts. I still get about one restart a day which is still very poor stability but much better than getting many restarts per day.
I use my phone all day, and I get maybe a restart once a week, maybe twice. My wife doesn't use her 5S nearly as much as me, and she sees multiple restarts every day. My iPad 3 gets used at night, and its had maybe 2 restarts since I installed iOS 7.
Update on restart issue: contd..
With touch is off, my 5S worked flawless without restarts and multiple tasking and gaming and arc were smooth and snappy and awesome. After a week of testing the phone, with apple support I went back to using touch id.
Third day the restarts started.
How I wished the phone worked as it was with touch is off.
Anyways, my 5S is to be swapped.
I hope the issue gets with restarts in many 5s gets resolved soon. Maybe it is a hardware software issue with some of the units.
Hope my next phone works without any hitches.
I appreciate the way Apple support handled my issue over the last few weeks.
Hello guys, i have an 5s 64gb, my phone since day one have this issue, also get freeze by seconds and sometime freeze totally and i have to hard reset the device. after doing all recommended procedures by apple, back up, start from zero, etc, tech support decide to replace my phone and tell you that i expected to be solved but no, same symptoms sill present...
I have been following this problem because really i wish to go back to a iphone 5 instead.
Moments that my phone is doing the restart is when:
- the phone is lock and i want to use the camera, instead of open the app just reset, try this 3 times one after the other.
- having the phone unlock and try to open the camera.
- try to open any app ( apple or not )
- it happen with little memory used or almost full memory.
I keep the phone with all apps close as possible and hard reset few times a month to keep the phone working properly. This very issue is new and make my $900 phone to be useless until this issue is addressed.
I have lost moment of memory to have pictures taken and i could not do it , very frustrating. Samsung owners laugh at me and Apple, and all i want is to have a fully functional smartphone.
I Have this issue too !! This is Very annoying .. I just cannot believe this is th iPhone 5s !! i Even Restored Once and it just worked for 24hrs And then Restarts Came to me !! i have harder problems like Moving the CLock icon to the up !!! and also battery icon to the down !!!! i Just Hope Apple will Fix this Fast 'Cause this is Not good for the best known Products of a big Company .
I am having similiar issue, phone does not restart but the slide to turn off red bar keeps showing up at random. Further, I have random key strokes in text messages and apps closing and opening all on their own. Very bizarre behavior. Good to see that this is hopefully a software bug that Apple will need to resolve soon.
I reply to you Partsa because I too have the same exact phone. Any worthwhile assistance would be awesome, hint hint apple!
WE are not alone with these symptoms... We have to call apple support and inform the problems and wait to be resolved o. Futures ios updates.
THe behaivor you have i had it on previous versions of iphones and i was usi g a outerbox defender case to protect my investment, somehow with the dust that goes in little by little and touch screen start acting funny, even the keys when using the keyboard start flicking. So i renuonce to protect the pho e and got a cheap poetic slim version case and that got it solved...
AT this point i am using the phone less than usual beacuse i am to busy at the office, even with that i have the reseting issue one to twice a week.
GOod luck, and i will keep you posted if any change or fix is found.
happy new year 2014!!!
Dear users,
A had absolutely same problems.
I bought iPhone 5S and did a restore of my previous iPhone 4 to it instantly.
It was working few days without any issues then I've realized these rebooting problems.
1. I called to Apple Support
2. I did exactly what the guy told me.
- I have done clean Recovery in DFU mode
- I have setup my iPhone 5S as a "new phone"
- I did not perform any further data restore. This is really important!
3. Now I'm working with phone without any issues since 26th November ...
PLEASE DO NOT RESTORE your data, seems there is something fishy. Just simply use it as NEW! Upload all your applications and you will be fine. Just do not perform restore of data. Till now I haven't faced any reboot neither any problems. TouchiD is working fine. And everything is working fine as well. JUST DO NOT RESTORE, PLEASE. Make it clean. If you do perform restore you will have bad time again.
My iPhone is now doing this at least once a day, if not twice. I am running iOS 7.0.4. I have a 32 GB iPhone 5 (not 5s). I have had the problem for a while now, but I haven't noticed it nearly as much as I have in 7.0.4.
Interestingly, I have an iPad 3 that I haven't gotten around to updating and it's running iOS 7.0.3. I don't use my iPad nearly as often as I would like and I haven't seen it happen on it. But I am not planning on updating to iOS 7.0.4 just to see if I can isolate it to the latest build, however I am aware that people on here have complained about it running iOS 7.0.2.
There is absolutely, positively without a shadow of a doubt something happening here on the software level that's causing this. And this is well beyond anything that we can do on this end. Restoring and all those little step-by-steps that Apple thinks is always useful but rarely is won't work this time.
Here's hoping that Apple actually reads these things and fixes this. It's the biggest problem I can remember in quite a while.
Strangely, I have follow the advice and switch the ReduceMotion back to "OFF" post by forumers earlier.. My iPhone5s does not have any reboot since then.. its been about 2 weeks already..
lol that's interesting, i'll give that a try
