iPhone 5S restarting itself

Anyone else having their 5S sporatically restarting itself? So far, there seems to be no pattern, other that I'm usually playing a word game on it when it happens.

My iPhone 5s also has been restarting itself automatically. I've done the restart, restore, etc to no avail. I've had no other issues until now. Has been happening twice a day for a week now. I haven't added/removed/changed any apps or personal settings. I am using the most recent version of ios 7.0.4. My battery is always fine so it's not a low power issue. I have a 64GB phone and I'm no where near even 25% usage on that.

For the first time ever - I'm confused.

This issue is still plaguing me on my 5s with 64gb. I have a little more to add to the conversation. There are many variables in play, but we can all agree that iOS 7 is causing the issues as it appears restarts are happening on iPhone 5 and iPads under iOS7. I think the restarts are happening more frequently for 5s users since there is the added compexity of the TouchID sensor.

I have had problems with 2 iPhone 5s devices. My original phone continued to have restart problems, so Apple replaced it to see if that would help, and it hasn't. I did NOT restore from backup on either phone, just started as a new phone.

  • Reduce Motion - when I run with Reduce Motion On, I get more restarts (several times per day). When I turn Reduce Motion back "off" which is the default, I get far fewer restarts (sometimes once a week), but then the battery performance takes a significant hit for me as the motion features seem to drain my battery with heavy phone users like myself
  • Touch ID / Fingerprint Sensor - this contributes to the restart problems as most of my restarts occur when unlocking my phone with TouchID. But I do have some restarts that occur when switching between or opening apps. I have noticed that many of my restarts occur when I unlock the device and immediately go into an App, like to check my messages. If I wait a few seconds after unlocking, I have noticed fewer restarts. Could be a coincidence, but thought I would mention this. I also have had fewer restarts when I limited the number of fingerprints I enrolled. When I got the phone, I enrolled 5 prints (the maximum), and I had more frequent restarts. Not sure if that is a coincidence too, but adds to the complexity when your device is searching a larger database to unlock. Now, I enrolled just my two thumbs, and enrolled one of my thumbs twice in the third spot (this was a tip from another user about increasing the successful unlocking of your device on the first try, and this has helped in my success rate, and my restarts are less too).
  • Complex Passwords - I have noticed fewer restarts when I use a simple/4 digit passcode along with Touch ID versus when I have complex (greater than 4 digit) passcode enabled. I had a few coworkers switch from Simple passcodes to complex, and they started having restart issues when they had none previously.
  • Case/Covers - not sure if the OtterBox case causes some issues for some, but I have one on my 5s, and I have had a replacement phone and both continue to have the restart issues, and it can't be only the cases fault.

Let's hope for an upgrade to iOS 7 that will correct this problem. Come on Apple... our patience is running out.

Thanks for that Dan, my experience is almost exactly reflected in your comments.

My 5S 16gb was replaced without question by O2 when I first reported the "fault" but the new one was doing the same within minutes, from reading here, I see numerous others have seen the same, this problem absolutely has to be an issue with IOS7.

I'm now using mine with - 4 digit password, fingerprint ON and reduce motion OFF, I now get maybe one restart a week which I can live with for now.

What I can't understand is how after all this time, Apple have failed to come up with a resolution to it, there are clearly a significant number of people reporting devices affected by the fault/bug - and maybe quite a few more who have given up and switched to Android!!

Hi,

I've only had my iPhone 5s 32gb for 2 weeks and I also experienced the same as you guys. It used to reboot 1-2x a day this week with wifi on. I thought it was due to viber cause I usually have viber on. But last night it was crazy! It restarted on its own about 10x while on cellular and no apps running. I have the 7.0.4 version from the start.

I already did the back-up and restore last week. I didn't experience it on the first week, just after the restore (we were trying to solve another issue- making the hotspot work again and it did but now it keeps restarting).

I sent it back to Apple for diagnostics today- hope they can fix it/replace it soon. I also have problems with the battery (3-4 hrs usage on cellular, 5 for wifi).

It is a bad experience for me since this is my first iPhone and first smartphone. I hope it gets fixed soon. I only had 2 fingerprints registered, a simple passcode, and less than half of total memory used.

I am having the same reboot issue - most frequently when I use the touch "id" button. It happens a few times each day and it is now irritating enough that I am considering returning it for a 5C. The others in the family use a 5C and are not seeing this problem. It also happens frequently when taking photos - again involving the touch button.

Of some concern seems to be how prevalent this issue is with people I know. Two friends have the 5S and when discussing it they both commented that the same issue occurred for them and they just accepted it and assumed it would be fixed in an ios update.

If it is a hardware issue - I am not so confident as they are.

My 5S (64gb) has been pretty solid, but I have had it spontaneously reboot on me twice in the middle of the night when I wasn't using it. I could tell the next morning because it says "Passcode Required After Restarting" at the top. So maybe it was an automatic app update that triggered it, or maybe an iCloud backup? Either way it wasn't from something I was doing.

Only once has it rebooted on me while I was using it (the 12 Days of Gifts app), and I got a blue screen first before getting the Apple logo, and when it got to the lock screen it then rebooted again.

My iPad Air has been rebooting much more often.

Looks like a couple of issues here, touch id and software related.

My 4s running 7.0.4 also does this short reset from time to time, it usually happens shortly after going into an app, for example the 12 days Xmas app, no other apps are running. 9/10 times it is ok.

Others have reported iPads resetting, my ipad 4 (also 7.0.4) has never reset, it also runs 12 days Xmas, so maybe it's to do with a combination of apps and/or settings. Either way, Apple are taking time fixing it, so assume it's not straight forward.

I have both iPad 2 and iPhone 5S running iOS 7.0.4

iPad 2 has never had a problem with re-setting, in which the screen goes black, the Apple logo appears, and then the device re-boots.

With iPhone 5s it seems to be linked to the Touch ID. That is the only thing that has periodically triggered a re-set on my iPhone. It does not do it all the time, or every day ~ just occaisionally. If I stop using the Touch ID and enter the Passcode instead there is no problem.

Whaever the cause, Apple needs to fix this!!

Well, whatever is happening seems to be killing my phone (5S). I was opening an app folder from the home screen and it blue screened and rebooted. Then when it got to the lock screen it would reboot again. It went on like this for maybe 8 reboots total, with 2 complete lockups in there where I had to hold down the home and lock buttons to get it to reboot. It seems to have stopped spontaneously rebooting and I've got it plugged into my PC now and am doing a backup. I think I might do a restore and see if it behaves better.

My iPhone 5S running iOS 7.0.4 also started restarting itself 3-4 times a day.

Did a restore from iCloud. Issue didn't get fixed.

Set it up as a new phone. That didn't fix the issue either.

Then Apple replaced the phone for me. Same restarting issue on the new device too.

I use my phone way too much - this wasted time on restarting is very frustrating. Even restarted as soon as I dialed a number. Going to call Apple and try to report this to higher level support.
