I tried to install the new OS Mavericks update, but it keeps saying Install Failed Macintosh HD is damaged or corrupt and needs to be repaired.

I open the Utilities in the toolbar

Run Varify Disk, it says i need to repair disk

But the button is grayed out and i cant cancel the install because it says the selected drive doesnt have enough information!

Please help :/

The same exact thing happened to me, with a late 2011 MacBook Pro, right after Mavericks was made available. I was finally able to recover my previous installation from Time Machine, after trying everything as was described, greyed out buttons, etc., but it took me over a day to finish everything. I suppose Apple doesn't consider this normal, especially after mentioning it won't support older OSX versions. Surprisingly, even my Parallels VM got recovered, but I would like to be able to upgrade to the latest OSX. It's January 30, 2014 and I keep thinking I should try again, but I'm not sure I will, unless the latest Mavericks update changed/fixed whatever was causing that. Has anyone tried it twice?

Update after my last post: I removed Comcast's Norton Internet Security and the installation went smoothly. I read that the Norton version I had on my computer wasn't compatible with Mavericks, but I'm not sure whether that was the problem--Mavericks could have had an issue with any version of any antivirus for the Mac (the same way that often happens with Windows when software gets installed) or it could be that the latest version of Mavericks fixed some conflict.

I checked my system and do not have any Norton components. After multiple install failures yesterday despite repairing all disk permissions, I had to reboot into the Time Machine backup that I completed prior to installation. My hard drive is passing verification so it is not the problem. There is some incompatibility that is driving this installation failure and until there is a simple solution for installing the new Mavericks OS, I'm not going to risk another update and the many hours lost that accompany the restoration process from Time Machine. Definitely not the easy OS upgrade that I've grown accustomed to with Apple products. Mavericks. No thanks.
