Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I tried to install the new OS Mavericks update, but it keeps saying Install Failed Macintosh HD is damaged or corrupt and needs to be repaired.
I open the Utilities in the toolbar
Run Varify Disk, it says i need to repair disk
But the button is grayed out and i cant cancel the install because it says the selected drive doesnt have enough information!

You could create a second partition on the external (if there is space) and direct Time Machine to that, but if you choose the entire drive as the destination you may lose some or all of what is already on it.
Looks like im going to move 300GB of infomation from my 500GB HDD to my 2TB so i can backup on my smaller HDD... going to be a long night!

Command-R boots to Recovery, hold it down as soon as you hear the chime.

I just found an extra 500gb external HDD still in the box that i had forgot about lol
Backing-up on via time machine

Been backing up for 1-2hours now, opened up Console and it just says "com.apple.backupd waiting for index to be ready (101)"

Unable to repair the disk using Disk Utilities from Recovery, unable to boot in Safe Mode, shuts down while gray status bar at around 50%. Last backup few weeks old. Need help.. can anyone guide me ?

Same thing happened to me!
I tried it just restore a backup from my time capsule ( week old ) but jut kept saying "finding disk" .. Left it for 15 minutes and nothing happened!
Was able to go into safe mode but didn't let me access my time capsule... Booted back up and went into disk utility and did a disk repair, said it repaired whatever... Tried to restore from my time capsule and seems to be working ...slowly ... It's been about half an hr and it's only at 1% .. Says 13 hours and 18 minutes left..
The real question is... After we are backup and running... Is this going to happen again? What caused this?

I received the same error, but I can not boot into safe mode, and have no way to backup. I mostly have music that can be redownloaded iTunes or re-ripped, so not worried about data loss since my old time machine backup, but if I erase, how to I start over with a bricked MacBook Pro?
I have a Macbook Air 2011 brand new, and it is doing the same thing. Tried recovery mode, tried installing new osx, tried verifying and repairing disk permissions and got all of this again. Going to apple tmrow to see what they can do.
Has to be something with Mavericks. Glad my MBP with about 80 gb worth of very important files and documents did not get screwed. Might look into getting a getting a time machine very very soon.

Guys I had this same problem today. Was scared as **** that i would lose everything on my computer, luckily i was able to back convert to Lion OS X. Check this thread, it helped me immensely!
