I open the Utilities in the toolbar

Run Varify Disk, it says i need to repair disk

But the button is grayed out and i cant cancel the install because it says the selected drive doesnt have enough information!

I had the exact same problem. I ended up installing Mavericks on an External HD when I was given the option in the setup process ( just a 1TB Western Digital Hard Drive) From that External HD I allowed Mavericks to boot up all the way, answering all the setup questions as if I had just bought a new computer. Once that was all done, I accessed Preferences / Start Up Disc.....and chose to reboot from my Mac's Internal HD (until this point, during the setup process, the internal HD had been inaccessible). My Mac then booted up just as it always has with Mountain Lion and all of my files and settings were untouched.

Oh, man!

I can't believe this is happening but I am sort of glad the problem is not unique to me! Ahahaha..

Triying the Command+R option to repair my internal HDD now and crossing my fingers that it will work.

Even if I did back up my data, why do we have to go through all this and erase our internal HDDs and restore?

I was so looking forward to Mavericks!

😠

I'm having the same problem too. I have no idea what to do. I tried reading up on this tread still nothing. I can't repair disk I can't reboot and I can't even do a recovery like some suggested.

Lucky thing is I did a backup on my external drive before I try to upgrade.

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!! If I can't start my laptop I won't be able to work tomorrow. :(

This seems to be working....

You've got to get out of the Mavericks loop where you can't repair or erase the disk.

1. Restart your Mac

2. Hold down Command-R during startup and OS X Recovery springs into action. It will take a few minutes. But you should be back in the land of the cats (lion etc)

3. Choose 'Restore your Mac from a Time Machine backup'

4. Wait 12h for the restore to work

5. Then, send a strongly worded email to Apple Support!!!

Searching the web I found out that many people had the exactly same problem when installing Lion and/or Mountain Lion.

I found something that may help:

"Install failed. Mac OS X Lion couldn’t be installed, because the disk (volume name) is damaged and can’t be repaired. Click restart to restart your computer and try installing again.

If you see this unwelcome message, chances are slim that trying again will lead to success. The same is true if the Install application simply stalls before completing. Some users report that “zapping the PRAM” is sufficient to get past this roadblock. Otherwise, according to an Apple Support Communities thread, the fix is to boot from a Snow Leopard Install disc/drive and select to Repair Disk from Disk Utility. Assuming repairs are successful, try the Lion installer again."
