Older iWork´09 and iLife´11 versions - updates to newer versions not free?

Hey everyone,

I know the question is worded a little weird (I couldn't find a better to describe that) but I'm confused about the new updates for both mentioned programs. According to Apple the new apps are free if you buy a new Mac or iDevice. But what if I bought iWork ´09 and iLife ´11 back when both were still available on CD? I bought iWork´09 back when it was released and iLife´11 in June 2011. Updating to the latest versions were not a big deal, the "older" versions work perfectly with Mavericks.

When I check for software updates it says there are no updates and all these apps are available to buy via the MAS.

Do people have to buy these apps (again) if you want to use the latest versions? What if someone bought an older version via the MAS - do they have to buy these apps again as well?

I hope someone can clarify certain things.

Thanks in advance.

@Old Toad

My Mac is running Mavericks and as I stated in the OP the latest versions (e.g iPhoto 9.4.3 or iMovie 9.0.9) before Apple updated all the apps are working perfectly. So that's not the issue here.

I was just curios to know if people who bought the CDs years ago are able to update for free as well. As other stated who bought older versions of these apps via the MAS were able to update for free, so why not the ones who bought the CDs when the Mac App Store wasn't around?

I hope that will change since Garageband is for free now.

Hi contigo1109,

This is what it says on the Apple site:

"Pricing & Availability

iWork and iLife for Mac come free with every new Mac purchase. Existing users running Mavericks can update their apps for free from the Mac App Store℠. iWork and iLife for iOS are available for free from the App Store℠ for any new device running iOS 7, and are also available as free updates for existing users. GarageBand for Mac and iOS are free for all OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 users. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available for a one-time in-app purchase of $4.99 for each platform."

It would seem that it would be free for us too. Unfortunately when i go to iPhoto in the app store it will cost me $14.99 to download it. I will wait and see what happens.

For ha has I clicked on OS X Mavericksin the App store and I get the download button. Funny thing is I have already downloaded and installed it. So maybe there is a lag in info being updated or something.

Hey lori_diloreto,

I was reading that earlier as well that's why I assumed the CD version users will get updates too. So far, all these apps are still shown as paid apps in the MAS for me with no possibility to update for free.

Oh well, these "old" apps still work and do their job. I still hope that will change.

edit:

I was reading another board where people had the same issue. Apparently someone talked with Apple stating the following (this applies to iWork but I'm sure this applies to iLife as well):

just got off the phone with apple. Iwork '09 retail box purchases will receive the update. They are aware of the bug and just ask us to be patient. We will get it for free!

There is a problem on Apple side for people that had iLife 11 installed with disk version. I just let them know and they are going to try and fix it. They did give me a solution to update now. Here are the steps to do that if you want it right now

1.Go to system preferences. 2.Open up User and Groups. 3.Unlock the lock. 4. Press Plus sign. 5.Create a new account and put TEST in the Full Name area. Change new account to an Administrator. Don't put anything else in. Hit Create User. 6. Log out of your account and then log in to the new TEST account. 7. Go to software update where the Apple is on the top left. You will now see iPhoto and iMovie. 8.You have to install Garageband separately and it does install separately then older Garageband. You can keep both installed. 8. Log out of the TEST account and log into your account. Delete the TEST account, and you are all done. Now you will have all new installed.

If you had purchased a copy of Pages, Numbers or Keynote from the App Store then new versions would be a free update. However, upgrading from a iWork 08 or 09 disk is considered an upgrade and would have to be purchased.

I got the same for iPhoto, a purchase price was listed. But when I click on the icon to bring up the info window it was shown as a free download. Same for iMovie and Garageband.
