Older iWork´09 and iLife´11 versions - updates to newer versions not free?

Hey everyone,

I know the question is worded a little weird (I couldn't find a better to describe that) but I'm confused about the new updates for both mentioned programs. According to Apple the new apps are free if you buy a new Mac or iDevice. But what if I bought iWork ´09 and iLife ´11 back when both were still available on CD? I bought iWork´09 back when it was released and iLife´11 in June 2011. Updating to the latest versions were not a big deal, the "older" versions work perfectly with Mavericks.

When I check for software updates it says there are no updates and all these apps are available to buy via the MAS.

Do people have to buy these apps (again) if you want to use the latest versions? What if someone bought an older version via the MAS - do they have to buy these apps again as well?

I hope someone can clarify certain things.

Thanks in advance.

I'm running OS X 10.9. Garageband was available for free as stated in the MAS where it said "free". The other apps are still shown with the price. When I click on the price it only asks me if I want to buy them.

Either it's a bug like in the macrumors thread and the other user here mentioned or "existing users" means something else for Apple 😁

I'll give it a rest today and try agan tomorrow. If not, I might buy the apps. They're not that expensive to begin with.

I was in the same situation as everyone who had the CD version of iWork '09. I figured out a way to update without purchasing the product again. Since the MAS does not recognize that I have already intalled iWork it does not prompt me for an update. I just logged out of my main user and logged in to the guess account and search for updates there. Since I was not logged in to the MAS, the system recognize that I had iWork and prompted me to do the update. Then, it required me to log in with my apple ID, which worked just fine. So, in conclusion.. I now have the updated version of iWork! Hope this helps!

then how do you explain all these posts on macrumors where people who had the CD versions of iLife and even iWork installed are able to update for free which can be seen here

I doubt these people are saying nonsense since a lot of people can confirm that they were able now to update. iDVD is not even a topic here and it should be known by now that Apple discontinued it. Thanks for your input though.

This hasn't worked for me and Apple on the phone were about as helpful as a week long toothache. Mind you that's Apple UK all over.

Simply put, another nail in the confin as far as I concerned and my loyalty to a company that, since the passing of Steve Jobbs, rides rough shot over their customer base.

And on looking about the web, it seems this impressions and the numbers of those realsing this are growing.

Apple, although you might/don't read this, a word from the people that keep you afloat.. "Pull ********, and have a word with yourself".

Poor show, very poor show.

Ok, I found the solution. Probably, for anyone who is still not able to update, your computer primary language is set to something else than English. So go to System Preferences and set the primary language to English. Restart, open Software update from the Apple menu and all updates should appear automatically. If they don't yet, go to the 'Featured'-page, click on 'Account' from the menu on the right and click the option to Reset all warnings for buying and downloading (last option). I have both iWork and iLife installed from disk, and in this way everything works.
