Older iWork´09 and iLife´11 versions - updates to newer versions not free?

Hey everyone,

I know the question is worded a little weird (I couldn't find a better to describe that) but I'm confused about the new updates for both mentioned programs. According to Apple the new apps are free if you buy a new Mac or iDevice. But what if I bought iWork ´09 and iLife ´11 back when both were still available on CD? I bought iWork´09 back when it was released and iLife´11 in June 2011. Updating to the latest versions were not a big deal, the "older" versions work perfectly with Mavericks.

When I check for software updates it says there are no updates and all these apps are available to buy via the MAS.

Do people have to buy these apps (again) if you want to use the latest versions? What if someone bought an older version via the MAS - do they have to buy these apps again as well?

I hope someone can clarify certain things.

Thanks in advance.

Indeed, exactly the same here, I also bought those two on CD when they both came out, up untill now I was able to update to newer versions without any problems. I hope they also give iWork/iLife disc versions an update as I assume that people who bought these from the App Store just receive an update of the apps (like Pages, iPhoto and iMovie do on my iPad, right now).

Same problem here too... Although to confuse matters, Garageband is free for me, I have to pay for the other two apps, iMovie and iPhoto... How GB became associated with my MAS account remains a mystery.

(I also have this problem with iWork)

Will be calling support in the morning to question. I certainly do not want to be paying twice for a product/software and think it is deeply unfair if they think that is fine and expect me too.

Apparently Garageband is now free for ANY Mac running Mavericks - at least that's what it says all the way on the bottom of this page : http://www.apple.com/creativity-apps/mac/

It says : "

** GarageBand is free on the Mac App Store for all compatible Mac computers with OS X Mavericks. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available with an in-app purchase. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID."

It was free for me as well and I never purchased it on the MAS. Only on the iLife 11 CD way back when

iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband are free. However, you must be running Mavericks in order to download and use them. Therefore your Mac must be capable of running Mavericks:

The following is from: Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mavericks.

User uploaded file

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

iWork is not as it's an upgrade and not an update. Upgrades for iWork have always had to be purchased. However, the previous iWork apps will work fine with Mavericks.

I aint running Mavericks yet... although I get your point above. After iOS7 i am waiting a while before going ahead. Although, my flatmate has upgraded and is still getting the same results when it comes to iLife apps...???

As for iWork, oh well, pay for it, it is then I guess...

I will update as to Apple's repsonse tomorrow... Paying twice for something already paid for is not on...

Older iWork´09 and iLife´11 versions - updates to newer versions not free?
