iWork purchased on disc in 2011. Why can't I upgrade free?

I bought iWork on disc at BestBuy with my MBP in 2011. But when I click on Pages, Numbers or Keynote in the App store I get the message, "Pages 4.3 is already installed but was not purchased on the App store. Would you like to purchase? $19.99"

Why can't I upgrade? I did buy it, but at the time it was not even AVAILABLE in the app store.

I have the latest updates to iWork '09 (the last versions available prior to today). I just launched Pages to check the actual version and was greeted with the "There's a new version - Update?" dialog, to which I said Update (it's v9.3, btw, which is also the latest version showing on the Apple Support -> Downloads" page, kinda confusing since Numbers just told me that version 3.0 is available and the currently running version of it is 2.3). That brought up the updates tab of the MAS again but still does not show an update for any of the iWork apps.

Perhaps this will all just take some time to smooth out. I went to the support option under the help menu for Pages and was taken to the "What's new in Pages '09" support 🙂 - maybe a little patience is all that's required...

Indeed, I tried clicking on the Apple and selecting "software updates" and it takes me to the App store where it tells me that there are no updates available. I did have all updates to the current version available today, (Pages '09 4.3, Numbers '09 2.3 and Keynote '09 5.3)

I was also told when launching that an update was available, but when I clicked "update now" it took me to the MAS where it said "there are no updates available." 😝

I suspect those of us who purchased physical copies of our software are simply out-of-luck when it comes to these upgrades. If I'm honest, the apps weren't that expensive, and I got a lot of use out of my $79 over the past 3+ years, so if I have to pay for the upgrade I guess it's not that big of a deal. Before the Mac App Store it was common practice to pay for major software upgrades anyway.

I'll be more annoyed if the next version of Aperture is free to those who purchased from the MAS but not for those who forked out $300 for the past two versions!

What about this, then? http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2013/10/23Apple-Introduces-Next-Generation-iWork -and-iLife-Apps-for-OS-X-and-iOS.html
"Existing users running Mavericks can update their apps for free from the Mac App Store℠"
As I was running purchased and up-to-date versions of iWork and iLife up until today, why can I not get these point-upgrades too? They aren't new versions. Apple doesn't seem to care that I bought them on DVD, not via the store in the PR release. I get it that the MAS has no idea that I've got these apps installed, however. ANy ideas how to tel the MAS that they are present?

All that I can tell you at this point is that updates for MAS apps are free, but upgrades are paid. A dot increment is usually an update, such as 4.5 to 4.6, but a version increment, such as v4 to v5 is usually a paid upgrade. And moving from the DVD versions to the MAS versions has never been free, even if you went from 4.3 to 4.3.

But I have been dealing with kidney stones since Saturday afternoon, so I'm on heavy meds and I haven't seen the keynote from today.

YMMV.
