Keyboard and Mouse Unresponsive - Mavericks

Every few minutes, a lot of times when switching to Safari or Mail, but sometimes just while using them, my keyboard and mouse will become unusable. Mouse won't move or click, keyboard won't work at all. Keyboard is USB, mouse is bluetooth. I removed all non-Apple Safari plugins, no change.

Working for me now, although I'm still on ML on my main boot drive. I'm really curious as to what others find compelling about upgrading to Mavericks. I couldn't care less about iBooks or Maps. I know there's some stuff under the hood, but it seems to primarily benefit laptop users. Since I'm on a Mask Pro I'm not sure about the benefits. Although, when the new Mask Pro comes out next month, I may be forced onto 10.9.

The new Mac Pro will almost certainly not support 10.8, new Apple hardware rarely supports older OS versions.

Apple Desktops have been outsold by laptops for many years now & iMacs are the majority of Apple's desktop systems. Mac Pro users are in a minority of minorities.

Mavericks has many improvements for laptops, however Pro users should see benefits too, such as compressed RAM, better CPU background usage.

http://www.apple.com/osx/advanced-technologies/ See the pdf at the bottom for even more details.

If your apps are supported Mavericks will be a good choice, just don't expect plain sailing if you have lots of extra apps that run at boot & insert kernel extensions or startup items.

EtreCheck will highlight what is happening on the OS, as will the new Activity Monitor.

Hi everyone,

Although I'm sympathetic to all those Logitech users who have been blessed with an update today so their Logitech peripherals now work, we're still stuck with the original problem.

That is to say that some of us, not all I know, but some of us, who are using MacPro's have lost all usb functionality since upgrading to Mavericks, 10.9.

As with other members of this discussion, I've also been forced to install 10.8 & 10.7 on separate SATA HD's. I have three 2TB for all my stuff and being used as scratch discs for Creative Suite and I have a 240Gb SSD with my boot system on it. Originally my SSD was 10.8 and I upgraded it via the correct processes to 10.9 and that's where all my usb woes began.

It's only by luck I suppose I've got the spare HD capacity to install the older operating systems on the other drives, however it still doesn't fix the original problem.

If I boot in 10.9 no usb, either through front or back ports, but if I boot in either 10.7 or 10.8, I have usb in the very same ports.

The only way I can get 10.9 to recognise my usb keyboard and mouse is to boot up holding down the option key and bringing up the recovery partition etc.

I'll also add that in 10.9 my MacPro has also decided I don't have Bluetooth either, however as is the same case with the usb, if I boot up in either 10.7 or 10.8 it recognises the on-board Bluetooth.

So what the bloody **** am I supposed to do? It's not a RAM thing either, I've got 12GB of that. Been pulling my hair out over this for the past week on and off. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Many thanks, Mikee

Do some troubleshooting…

Try Safe mode

https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

'Safe mode' stops the loading of 3rd party extensions & background jobs. If the USB works you can assume something is loading inside a normal boot (either kernel extensions, background jobs or startup jobs).

If it doesn't work in Safe mode you can either assume a hardware failure (run Apple Hardware Test) https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 or it could be the OS is damaged. In which case a reinstall will overwrite any damaged files & should leave the user data & apps in place. Backup before you reinstall - just in case.

EtreCheck will show what apps are set to autoload & what else is running, if you post it here we can point out software that may either need to be updated or removed.

Seeing the same behavior on my system....though I don't have any logitech software loaded (funny as I have a MX mouse, but it's not installed yet on the new system)

Saw the same thing happen on my Macbook Air as well after upgrading to Mavericks, I haven't tried running in safe mode yet as it's a pretty intermittent issue.

Welome to the forum, apologies I should have mentioned; please create a new thread & link to it from here.

Removing items via EtreCheck can be a slow process, so it's best if you have your own thread, otherwise it just gets confusing with people talking over each other, this one is well & truly hijacked so it may not matter much 🙂

With that said, I have seen many people have issues with Google Drive so update or remove it entirely (including the background update jobs).

I'd also disable login items as a test…

Logout of your user account (in the Apple menu)

Log back in, but hold shift as you press the login button. This will disable the login items in your user account. If the Mac is better like this you know you need to remove or update your login items.

Same problem for me: apple wired keyboard and mouse, both freezing when restart the computer (for updates). When I plug in another keyboard, it functions Even bought a new keyboard, since I thought it was ruined. In the system overview the apple keyboard, when froozen, is not appearing anymore at the USB bus.

Oh, it started after installing Maverick 10.9

what to do?

Dec 18, 2013 10:22 AM in response to Intherdt

Hi Intherdt,

Finally someone else having the same problem as myself and finally someone replying to the original comment and having nothing to do with Logitech devices or EtreCheck.

I've given up on Mavericks for the time being until several updates have been released and then plan to try again.

If anyone gas any ideas they'd be welcomed. I've tried Safe Mode, zapping PRAM etc. all the usual troubleshooting techniques, but no luck. Mavericks on my system doesn't like USB.

Cheers Mikee

Cheers Mikee

Post reports & spend time comparing them is my advice.

It will give you a fighting chance of isolating the issue to the software that is causing this. It can't be Mavericks on it's own because every user would have the same issues. It could be a combination of hardware & software.

A clean install will show if the flaw is in 10.9 or possibly your hardware. Apple Hardware Test should check the state of the hardware (to a limited extent) - Using Apple Hardware Test - https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

All the USB errors should be logged, so you'll need to look through Console (Applications/Utilities). Start in all messages around the time of the last failure/ freeze.

Hi Micheal,

I did a restart 'emptying' the para ram or p ram by pressing alt-cmd, p and r keys at the same time during restarting and it helped !

Key board and mouse are working again, pffff.

I have an Imac, 3.2 GHz, Intel core i3, 3 year and 9 months old.

I hope you will succeed as well in solving the problem.

My Imac 'docter' daid that if the p ram wouldn't help, I should reset the SMC. You can find on the internet apple support how that works. But I didn't have to try it (yet).....

I purchased a 15 inch macbook pro retina about a month ago. When I first purchased it, I did not have any of the issues in this thread, but after a couple of weeks I began experiencing the same keyboard/mouse lockup issues described here. I wasn't convinced that it was a Mavericks issue and I thought back to about when these issues started to appear for me and tried to remember if I had made any changes that might have caused this behavior. I discovered that about the time I started experiencing these keyboard/mouse lockups I changed my screensaver from a default value set with a fresh Mavericks install when I got the new computer to a screensaver called "Skyrocket". I had used Skyrocket on my previous Macs without an issue, but it appears that this screensaver was causing my keyboard/mouse locking issues. I changed my screeensaver a few days ago and I haven't had a keyboard lock since. Before I was getting locks several times a day.
