Swipes in Safari stop working

When using Safari in Mavericks, I can scroll up and down as usual with the 2-finger gestures, but if I try to do a 2-finger "back" swipe to go to the previous page that page freezes (can't scroll at all, no links respond and if try to click on the back/forward button, the page title and URL changes, but the page is still frozen as it was). I can go to another tab and navigate with the arrow keys, but all trackpad gesturing within Safari stops working. When I quit and relaunch Safari, all is back to usual. I deleted all Safari extensions, deleted all preference files, deactivated/reactivated the gesture in System Preferences and still acts the same. Any thoughts?

I have found a solution that have brought back swipes and no more freezes in Safari for me. Essentially it consists of forcing the swipe setting to be toggled a couple of times. For me, a single round of toggle has worked, and here is how to do it:

1) Navigate to the page System Preferences->Trackpad->More Gestures

2) Set "Swipe between pages" to disabled.

3) Click "Show All" to go to main System Preferences window (or type Cmd-Up as a shortcut)

4) Navigate back to the page Trackpad->More Gestures (eg by typing Cmd-] as a shortcut)

5) Set "Swipe between pages" to enabled.

It might be that the toggles can be automized by defaults writes, or, at least by Keyboard Maestro. Then it'll just be a keyboard shortcut to restore this bug whenever it occurs.

I have NOT installed BTT or any of the other gestures apps. I have some defaults writes, but nothing that ought to interfere. I think resetting the PRAM sounds like a sledgehammer.

Still have this problem. We'll see if resetting NVRAM fixes the problem, but I don't think it will. Also ran Apple Hardware Test (extended testing), found no issues.

Software/plugins of note in case there is some common denominator to this issue:

  • Flash Player 11.9.900.170 (latest version at time of posting)
  • Dashlane 2.3.2.52081
  • Reddit Enhancement Sweet 4.3.1.2
  • Little Snitch
  • AdBlock

Also, I've only noticed this recently. The only major software change I've made recently is installing Final Cut 10.1 along with Motion and Compressor. I'm wondering if this is related to the QTKitServer (not responding) issues I've also been having...
