safari 6.1 problems

Hi,

I just downloaded the latest Safari (6.1) without downloading Mavericks OSX and it's really buggy. It doesn't fuction properly at all... I reset the computer and I also did a shut down but to no avail. Does anyone else have a similar problem?

I've always upgraded without any problems... not sure why this is happening...

What can/should I do?

Thanks in advance

Do you have any Safari plugins like GLIMS installed? If so, you have to remove it first using their uninstaller or update to the new version (coming soon).

Have you tried repairing permissions?

Yes, but what a PITA! Either using the pulldown now or using three buttons to get to that window.

Mountain Lion allows users (espeically with trackpads) to organize/use their open programs in full page mode. I find it fast and easy with a track pad to move between open programs and still have a clean and easy to use desktop. However, in order to use the new bookmarks sidebar I have to wait for the menu bar to pulldown from full page mode so I can click the bookmarks icon (had to do that before as well so no problem there), and then do it again to rid myself of the ugly thing after clicking a link. No shorcut, no quick key, no automatic hide sidebar after clicking a link, and no configurability. It's archaic to me already and not in line with their own OS user interface and it's supposed to be a new "improvement". It makes me wonder if any of the folks at Apple actually use or pay attention to their own user experience.

And I agree with Espresso Me that this is all a far cry from the useful bookmarks manager. I, too, have a lot of bookmarks and folders/sub folders to oranize for my business.

Apple keeps dumbing down the user interface. OK. Maybe some casual users don't care. That's fine. But to keep taking away user configurability for those users who need it and count on it is simply not good business IMHO. User configurability has been a strength of Macs for decades until recent years. It's sad to see it go.

IMO, Apple needs to quit this clandestine "we tell you what's best for you"/"can't touch us", posturing they've turned into and Wake Up and LISTEN to their loyal and long time users who built and sustained their business for so long. Perhaps someone will LISTEN and build a better mousetrap eventually. I almost wish I had the expertise but it's beyond my capabilities at the moment. Until then, viable options for this type of user configurable experience seem to be becoming scarce.

I could not believe Safari 6.1. It has to be the worst designed version, from a usabilty point of view, in the history of OSX. The bookmarks appear to be utterly unsearchable if you have any number of them as has already been said. To read or search for any of the many bookmarks I have, I have to obliterate most of the current webpage, whch appears to completely negate any advantage this development was intended to provide.

And why was it beyond the intelligence of the designer of this monstrosity to provide a search function at the bottom of the sidebar? That is not exactly rocket science, even if it wouldn't eradicate the problem I mention above.

Many changes in Apple software often meet with resistance but generally on the grounds of personal taste. For example I like many prefer the look of IOS6 on my Iphone5 rather than IOS7, but apart from the monstrous loss of battery capacity, the IOS works fine. However Safari 6.1 is not a matter of personal taste - it's a matter of godawful design.

I hope that as many people as possible fill in safari feedback forms to force Apple to return to the previous format because from now on I shall have to use Google Chrome and I resent that. I'll check the updates regularly for a new safari but if I could go back to the previous version I'd do it like a shot - a much superior piece of softeware in terms of usabilty.

Thank you, Express_Me, for the excellent question, and to 1flight for a solution! I've been on the web two hours searching for that question/solution! Are you and I the only people in the world who use bookmarks? Seems so.

I did lose some bookmarks, though, to this new system, and I came close to losing all of them. I'd put them in a folder that seems to have disappeared now, the folder between Favorites and Bookmarks Menu. That happens to be the folder where I'd put my bookmarks.

Fortunately, I had just happened to place a link to the majority of bookmarks in 'Favorites' as well, or I might have lost them. Because the others- the minority of bookmarks are gone. Scary how close I came to the precipice. Or is that folder accessible somewhere?

Maybe my memory is off, but I could have sworn I had lots more bookmarks (of the majority) then I have now. Do you still have all your bookmarks?

Anyway guys, forget the little book icon in the corner, simply select "Edit bookmarks" and voila. Then to get back to the website, select "hide bookmarks editor." And if you want to put a bookmark into a sidebar folder, click the book icon and they'll be side-by-side. At least that part's easy.

I am so relieved. I thought I had lost access to hundreds and hundreds of bookmarks, because the sidebar cuts off access after only a few. For my work also, I use all my bookmarks all the time, plus need to quickly scan them all at once on a full page.

Thank you all for your threads which are much appreciated. Having pulled my hair out for the past few days and as a casual user I understand how frustrating this latest Apple release is for business-based die-hards. For my low volume use, the best solution I eventually came up with is to manually reload all web addresses and resave to bookmarks and delete the old bookmarks. My MacBook Pro 17" is now working just like a new one. I know this won't help the business people using Mac's but I hope it helps the lesser folk.

And how long do we think 6.1.1 will be away????

I also had trouble with bookmarks. If I tried to rearrange the position of a bookmark it would only let me move one and then no more. I'd have to force-quit Safari and start anew, which allowed me to change one more bookmark position with the same result. For me the killer was this: While Safari was in this bookmark-freeze mode I could no longer access Windows via Parallels. I reinstalled Lion from the recovery boot option and the problem was solved.

Just posted elsewhere before reading these posts:

Why doesn't Safari 6.1 insert a new Bookmarks folder where you want it to go?

Used to be in the Bookmarks editor, you placed your cursor at a specific spot in the list of bookmarks and clicked on "Add Bopkmarks Folder" and it appeared where you wanted it.

No more. Added bookmarks folders get added only to the top level of your bookmark folders and you have then drag them to the place you really wanted them to be added.

What gives? Why take away this useful function and make it dumber?

This is driving me nuts!! Bookmarks are a mess! Now I either have to look at all of my bookmarks all day taking up 3" of screen space on the left side of Safari, or I have to click and/or move my mouse TWICE as many times to get to one bookmark! What the what?!?! Going back to 6.0.5 right now...

This is a prefect example of some dude coming up with ways to change something that works perfectly so their boss thinks they've been working. Step away from the keyboard, bro.

Thanks, I followed those instructions and it worked great! So happy to have 6.0.5 back, I'd hug it if I could.

I don't know if anyone at Apple pays any attention to the forums but if they do, I hope they wise up. Safari 6.1 is an abomination, the worst thing I've ever seen come out of Apple! What IDIOT ever thought it was a good idea to screw up bookmarks so badly???

Dunbing down - an excellent discription of what Apple seems to have adopted as it's new business model. I so dislike Maverick that I refuse to down load it, regardless of any "improvements". But apple has found a backdoor into my system - "update" not upgrade the individual IOS APPS one at a time and before long you are working in Maverick. Just had the awful experience of updateing Safari to 6.1.1 from 6.0.1 - take away feature after feature seems to be Apples mode of operation since Steve passed on
