I have the same problem. Am using 2 Airport Expresses at home, one hooked up to a stereo receiver and one to a Bose SoundDock. My MacBook Pro is a 2010/2011 vintage (Intel Core 2 Duo) running Mavericks. The AirPlay icon ONLY shows up in iTunes, nowhere else. I used to be able to stream music to either of the AirPort devices from Safari (YouTube, Pandora, etc...) as the icon would show up directly in places like YouTube or Pandora, but not any more.

I found a workaround using Nicola8's suggestion - Thanks!

I have to go to System Pref - Sound - Output.. and on the Output tab, select the "device for sound output" as either of the two Airport Expresses (both show up there). A bit clunky, but it works! I can now stream my music as before. No issues.

Apple needs to fix this in Mavericks and have the icon conveniently show up everywhere as before!

I kept my finger pressed on shut down button till it asked me if i wanted to shut down i kept pressing then it shut and when i pressed the same button to start i got an error message (you restarted your computer because of a problem ...) i clicked start and after the airplay icon showed again and i was able to mirror my MBP 15"retina display again.

I hope this would help anybody

A Maverick sollution is in missing. But there's an App for this. I use Airwaves on my Macbook Air 13"

With preferences on and clicking in the menubar icon I see it switching between internaal speakers and Airplay. Good Luck.

I was having the same problem Airplay worked for my Macbooks audio in itunes and I could mirror on all of my iOS devices but it wouldn't show up on the menu bar anymore. I think with Mavericks they moved it. I was able to mirror by gonig to System Preferences > Displays and at the bottom there is a drop down menu that called Airport Displays. It also has a box that you can click to put the airport icon back on the top bar.

Before embarking on these various solution paths, can someone please confirm whether AirPlay is even a possibility for my mac? I have a 2008 or 09 MacBook. Software is OSX 10.9.4 with Mavericks downloaded last night. No AirPlay icon is visible, but there never was previously either (I think). Next question, if the answer to this is "no", would something like Air Parrot do the job? Or am I still too outdated.

The Air Play icon did not show on my iMac Menu Bar and Apple TV (ATV) did not show on my iOS devices under Air Play. It did previously on all of them. Because the iMac and iOS devices all did not have the ATV access, I looked to the ATV for the problem.

An auto update on the ATV failed so I manually updated it but did not solve the problem.

On the ATV, I went to Settings, Air Play, and found it was toggled OFF. I toggled it on and the iMac and iOS devices all have Air Play to the ATV. The Air Play icon shows on the iMac Menu Bar and ATV appears on my iOS devices under Air Play.

Obviously Air Play must be on to work and it was on previously. I do not remember turning it off. My suspicion is that either the failed update turned it off, a successful update turned it off in error, or some other gremlin turned it off.

Regardless of why it was off, I'm glad I went back to the basics to ensure that everything was how it should be even though it worked before and I did nothing to change it. (or did I?)

I am having the same problem as many people here now that I have updated to Mavericks. I have a late 2007 (!!) iMac, and just upgraded the OS. There is no Air Play icon visible in iTunes, and no way to enable it (at least in no obvious fashion). I had previously used Air Play with iTunes and Airfoil as well for my wireless speakers), and can still use Airplay on my MBA mid-2011 model (however only with Lion installed). I do not have an Apple TV, btw.

I do want to have this option and would consider downgrading again to Mountain Lion just to resolve this issue.

Is there any kind of workaround for this? I'm not very technologically adept and my ability to deal with this on my own would probably stop at entering a couple of commands into Terminal... after that I would need a tech.
