Downloaded Mavericks and there is no airplay icon. Went to system preferences and show mirrroring options in the menu bar when available is checked... ATV is on... Don't know what to do.

I did found the /Menu Extras/AirPort.menu but unable to launch the AirPlayUIAgent.app

Complete novice to iMac but I did have Apple TV. AirPlay and mirroring worked from my iPhone but not iMac. There was no Airplay icon visible.
I uninstalled McAfee virus guard and problem solved.
To enable the airplay icon for audio you have to hold ALT pressed while clicking on the loudspeaker icon. You'll then see all your different inputs and output devices.
Worked like a champ, Yabut!
Just unplug Apple TV (power plug) from back of unit...wait for a few seconds and plug back in. When in doubt, reboot.

Go to Settings. Click Display. Click the box "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available". The Airplay icon will show up in the menu bar.
