It seems that Apple forgot to tell us that the new iWork-release is called 'Garage-iWork' and that the most of us have to wait unil the release of 'iWork Pro'.

PS. The serious part:

I have been almost scared to death when reading all things reported in this thread. I have been working professionally with iWork (especially Pages) for many years and it seems that all advanced (but easy-to-use) tools I have been using in this work is gone in the new release. I see now very clearly that I still have to rely on Pages 4 in iWork '09, otherwise my business will be ruined.

It is quite incredible to see that we had to wait so many years for a crappy update with way too many features removed… and key features such as :

  • images in header (company logo ??)
  • selection of similar style
  • customized toolbar
  • reorganize pages by dragging gone
  • captured pages gone
  • side rullers gone
  • …

All of this GONE !

And the added features are somewhat limited and focused on the iCloud which is not really interesting for real business users : I don't want to share my private documents with any Apple iCloud servers - I have my own server inhouse THANKS.

Apple : give us back our features - This is not an upgrade but a downgrade.

We don't care about the iPad : who is seriously using iWork with an iPad anyhow !

New "feature:" if you want to open an existing template you previously created, you are forced to first add it to "Template Chooser." You can't simply open the template and use it. Seems like a very amateurish software design flaw. It's totally unnecessary.

I use an ever expanding number of templates all day long. Adding each different template to my "Template Chooser" is not workable for me.

Have to go back to 4.3.

This is interesting. Adding templates to the template chooser is painful in Pages '09, but actually I have all my templates in those places where I need them. Makes much more sens than throwing them all into the chooser.

I guess that is because we are Apple is moving towards a new file organisation system. Fine, but as long as it isn't finished or doesn't work yet propperly, I wouldn't want to be forced into it.

Pages 5 is unusable to me. I have over 1000 Pages documents and a quick sample showed that most were altered in some way and many were obsoleted by missing features. The new interface is clearly a nod to iOS rather than designed with serious productivity on a Mac in mind.

I will obviously have to stick with Pages '09 but Apple needs to reassure us that it will be developed and maintained. Removing it from the App Store is not a good sign.

I am already finding that scrolling is less smooth in Mavericks - Pages '09 could do with some optimisation there.

And then there are a small number of nice improvements in Pages 5 that I'm going to have to live without indefinitely (like the improved copy/paste table style for multiple cells, the reset image enhancements bug-fix, and the new shape combining feature).

Please help: where can one still get the old Pages 09? (to download, as of October 24th?) We have a school magazine based on a Pages 09 template and it is completely impossible to create the next issue of the magazine in the new Pages, because of lacking features such as insert pages or linking text boxes (and all that is described above). I do have the old Pages 09 on my computer but it would be great to have the possibility for others working on the mag to still downgrade to Pages 09.

thx!

I really wonder if Apple will be applying the iMovie / Final Cut Pro X model and offer a professional-level office suite in 6-12 months.

The one factor that weighs in favor of this is the fact that Apple will probably lose a lot of business customers for its software with iWork '13.

That doesn't seem like a software market that Apple would abandon. But maybe Apple has just decided to focus on light consumer use.

I would gladly pay $199 for a professional-level Pages update once every few years. I've been using Pages all day long for 4 years and it's served me very, very well. I was so happy to get away from Word.

Hoping this isn't the end.
