Huge thanks to MasaYan. Anything I did with Excel caused it to hang. FontNuke fixed the problem completely.
For me turning off Error Reporting helped - I could start Excel, and it informed mw which was the troubled font, which I could disable in Font Xplorer.
You can find the app here /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MERP2.0
Messing with deleting font folders (what I did in first try) caused me big problems - eg. all Microsoft fonts (Arial, Times) disappeared.
Same here error here
Microsoft Error Reporting log version: 2.0
Error Signature:
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS.....
We know this is known bug so developer should FIX it.
solved, at least in my case..
Error Signature:
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS.....
..
Possible solution..
1. open library in finder (Alt button show this hidden folder)
2. go to application support > microsoft > office > user templates > CREATE NEW FOLDER here no matter what name for example TEST.
3. open word > settings > files or file location...
4. change "user templates" to point your earlier created new folder (TEST)
5. Continue your work with Word!!
Solved for me:
PROBLEM:
Microsoft Word kept opening old documents on my MacBook Pro running Yosemite and Word 2011. Word wouldn't close properly. I would get an error message:
Error Signature:
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS.....
SOLUTION:
I went to each Word document and took them all out of full screen mode.
(Go to the upper right corner of the screen in Word and click the collapse arrows. Do this for each document that is open. You can switch between documents by clicking the Window menu item while in Word).
Then close Word.
I tried the above; Excel and Word application are now fine; However, Powerpoint still crashes!
Closing documents only after being in full screen mode worked beautifully. Thank you!
I did the entire list of a million steps to remove Office in its entirety from my Mac and then re-installed and still had the exact same problem. I then copied the text to a .txt file and back to a fresh word doc and it worked. So the issue seems to lie in the file itself. Or as the above couple posts seem to suggest the full screen mode. I couldn't answer to this because I always used it in full screen so maybe that could've fixed me too.
Hi;
Just found this thread since I have just experienced MSWord 2011 crashing moments after opening in MacOS 10.10.4. Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook were fine. I updated the Office Suite 14.5.2 and all is fine.

I “selected all” in my All Fonts and did the Validate Font. Then I deleted all the error fonts(mostly the red ones) and some duplicate fonts. Then I went through all the fonts looking for the yellow triangle ones and deleted the duplicate fonts. Low and behold Word ,Excel, and Powerpoint opened with no error. Didn’t have to use the FontNuke application.
I have MS WORD2016 for Mac, running OS X 10.10.5. purchased in October 2015. I have updated the latest fixes, Version 15.16 (151105) but it still crashes on startup 100 percent of the time. If I select recover work and re-start Windows, it will start up. One of the major reasons I switched to Mac was its reliability and stability. The minute you let a Microsoft product in the door, you are back to having the problems that caused you to leave Windows in the first place.
Though I can live with this quirk (I always leave WORD running in the background once I boot up) it is a nagging problem that Microsoft seems to care less about fixing. WORD worked OK for about two weeks after installation of MS Office. PP & Excel seem to work fine.
I wish I read this sooner but I noticed it was crashing when it was validating fonts. Go to font book and validate all and yes delete the conflicted fonts. WORKED FOR ME AS WELL!
