But how can I fresh install an English version of Office 2011 for Mac when I've got a license key for Polish? Or is it irrelevant and I just need to download the English version and activate it with my license key? Where do I download it from?
i have it in english latest version on mavericks. it didnt work until i installed a the java uptdate. after that it started working perfectly fine.
you can download Office from there: http://microsoft-word-2011.en.softonic.com/mac/download
your key for a pl version should work. I need to change system language to english though
The fix is to download or update Java Runtine.
The link is here:

This fixed my issue!
I my case Java did not helped - I've already have that update.
Reinstalled with Engish version (left the license file) and Word works correctly as well as all other apps.
(Do not be fooled by Installer - it is in local language even when installing English version)
I still do not understand why MS is not making multilingual versions of office...

Installing Java update did not work. I'm currently waiting for Word 2011 to download (from the link above).
Can I just install Word 2011 over my existing Office 2011? Or I have to uninstall the previous version first?
The JAVA Update doesn't help; in fact, I tried main Office 2011 products: Word 14.3.8, Excel 14.3.8, PowerPoint 14.3.8 and Outlook 14.3.8 and all crash. Will try re-installing Office
It works for me but only to some extent 😉
I downloaded the 'dmg' file hubboro provided link for and simply installed that copy of Office on my Mavericks. It looks now like I'm having two copies of Office installed (after installation another set of icons appeared in my Dock and some folders are doubled now), but they all seem to point to exactly the same apps in my /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011...
So I changed my system language to English and then Word started but... I wasn't able to run Outlook any more. It crashes while 'launching database' and asks me to choose another identity.
So it is either Polish and Outlook or English and Word 😉 But I need both to work 🙂
That's why first I have deinstalled whole polish package (leaving only license file and user data folder).
Installed then english package and moved user data from "Dane użytkownika..." into "User data" in Documents folder.
All office apps are English (I'm still using Polish as OS X locale) - all data remained untouched.

Can I contact you somewhere outside this forum (FB?)? I'm kind of noob when it comes to OS X (I've been using it for just a couple of weeks now) and don't want to ask to many trivial questions in this topic.
Been using Mavericks for a couple of months and have not seen a single problem FWIW.
2011, V 14.3.8
As for using Iworks. Are you forgetting Apple is also targeting business users and MS Word is prolific in business for legal, account, with change control/tracking/macros and much more. You can keep importing and exporting in the hope all the track changes work - my legal team would have a fit. Now, if Apple invested in Iworks for the PC and Microsoft invested in Office for the MAC, then your talking 🙂

No problem. Just use my profile email or via my webpage (easy to find by google)

Same problem for me with the same error message. It happens every time I save something in Word. At least my changes are saved, but it means I'm re-opening my document every 30 seconds or so as my habit is to save often.
And I have the most recent Word (English version).
I just installed OS X Mavericks and I can not open any of the Microsoft Office programs. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook all give me the same error message immediately after I attempt to open them. I have made sure that I have the newest version of the software and even went to microsoft.com to download the latest update which was October 8th. I use them everyday at work and so I am almost sure they had been installed previously. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks again.
Installing Office 2011 ENG solved the issue.
Reinstalling Java (I had 7) did not help.
