Make sure you have installed all updates of your Office programs to eventually get to version 14.3.8.
Apparently the English version of Office 2011 is the only version working with Mavericks.
Can you change a language version from within the package or is it a completely different one?
A completely different Office version.

Am slowly realizing the language issue .... sorry for not reading closely. Just saw cbs20's reply regarding English version.
I have the same build and ver. and i do not have any problems (MS OFFICE in english). Be sure that all 10,9 is updaded, and all software is updated. Close all the programs, and run a permition check, and then restart the Mac. Please note, that in my case, i did a clean install. All my programs including MS OFFICE and working. No issues and no errors.
I have the same problem with polish version of word
I have reinstalled Office, make some order with fonts, I've checked permition, even try to delete normal.dotm
Nothing works so far
Do you have any source for that?
I'm having the same issue with Mavericks and the Word for Mac 2001 version 14.3.8 English language. I took a look at this post http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948489 but I couldn't find this file it mentions Word Settings (10)...

I downloaded the most resent MS update, no help. I repaired permissions. It still did not work. I restarted my computer, still did not work, BUT I did finally did see a warning that MS Word needed Java Runtime 6 and did I want to install it? I installed it, restarted my computer and it opens now. 🙂
Crossing my fingers. If ONLY Pages had all the Write-N-Cite tools for serious writings. But then again, the new Pages already has some anoying bugs which have not been fixed. Will Apple ever get this right? Pages shows so much promise, but it can be very annoying at the same time. Selecting a block of text and changing the spacing to be a uniform double space does not change it at all. You have to go line by line. What a pain. Apple? Are you listening?
Doesn't help me. I have Java 7 upd 45. What should I do? Downgrade??
Microsoft local helpline has confirmed that this is a bug with non-english vesrion.
They are wokring on that - but fix time is not known.
The only solution right now is to fresh install English version of Office 2011 for Mac.
