Endnote X5 won't run on OS X Mavericks

I just updated OS X from Moutain Lion to Mavericks. Only one software couldn't be run on Maverick. It showed up the message "Unable to load: /Application/Endnote X5/Endnote X5.app/Resources/ENCore.bundle

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I had the same issue and upgraded Endnote to X7, and now my Word 2011 crashes every few minutes and runs into insufficient memory errors that don't really make sense. I didn't have any issues like this with Endnote X5 on OS 10.8. I'm on a 15" MacBook Pro Retina from 2012, so it's a pretty new machine. Anyone else having similar issues?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Thanks - you have saved my sanity! Have had problems ever since I uploaded Mac OS 10.9, Mavericks, and Pages 5. First my scanner wouldn't work, although the printer part of my all-in-one machine did; then EndNote wouldn't work, and Pages 5 was a disaster, as I am converting my doctoral thesis into a book. I followed your 'Apple' instructions and have restored my computer back, via Time Machine, to a week ago. EndNote X1 is back to full functionality, and my Pages 4.3 is restored too. I can get back to work now after wasting 4 days trying to fix things! Thanks again.

Actually, based on comments in other forums I was able to get Word 2011 to be more stable with X7 (under OS 10.9). I saved any docs I was working with as .docx and also deleted any other Endnote libraries that were sitting on my computer (other than my main one). I'm not sure which led to better performance (or whether it was both), but so far so good.

Hi all,

Thanks for the acknowledgement, Makushla, glad my earlier advice to revert back to Mac OS X Mountain Lion with instructions was helfpul.

Mochhhh: Good idea to stay on topic. Thanks, because some of the comments on here seem to be pretty pointless misdirections.

Now, further to my previous comments, I've got some more thoughts on the whole dilemma/problem of Endnote X5 not working with Mavericks.

The best alternative for me is to complete my current 100 000 word monograph in Pages 4.3 on Mountain Lion. Here is a concise assessment of the problem from King's College London: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/library/help/bibsoftware/endnote/updates.aspx

Basically, then, Endnote X5 on Mavericks seems doomed beause Thomson Returers has the 'convenient' solution of up-selling individual customers to X7.

So what's my alternative?

In future, I think I'll be switching to Zotero. It seems to me that this freeware is quite capable and ungoverned by Thomson Reuters' slow and sloppy updates.

I've researched the following method to get my Endnote bibliography into Zotero and hope this helps other academics/pro writers on this forum: http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/importing_records_from_endnote

I now have a functioning Zotero library but I'm not sure how Zotero works on Mavericks. If anyone else does, please do offer some feedback of your experience.

Best wishes to the community here.

Edit: Zotero/Mavericks seem to be okay so far...https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/32381/mac-os-x-109-mavericks/

OFF topic, sorry, but related. X5 is dead.

"Basically, then, Endnote X5 on Mavericks seems doomed beause Thomson Returers has the 'convenient' solution of up-selling individual customers to X7"

Yes this is true. But thanks to this comment of yours, I wrote to Endnote's help, asking when and if a fix for X5 woudl be available. They told me X5 wold be too difficult to fix for Mavericks and offered me the update discount + a 30% discount coupon. This comes to a fair price of US$ $69.96. I Downloaded the software and installed it without a problem. But then I was asked for the serial no of my previous version, Which I didn't possess as I had bought a volume licence at Uni last year. Again I wrote to the endnote help, told them the problem, with a screne shot of the original licence with the universities name on it and they were helpful enough to send a serial no which worked. Everything is working fine now, even in pages 4.3!

No don't bother asking for the discount coupon code nor the serial. I wont give it, nor sell it! The price is fair and Thomson Retureres also!

Downloading X7 works but why mess around with antiquated and cumbersome Endnote? I have used it only as a link between the old days with Reference Manager (which I used since version 1) and it is a very poor link from a PC version to Mac.

I have found Papers to be a much better, faster, cleaner piece of software. My guess is that there are other programs out there. Too much legacy in Endnote and its buried in a monster company.

Papers 3 (new, I am using 2) is $79. I'm not a Papers rep, just a happy user.
