Icon disappear after upgrading maverick
MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9)
Had the same problem, icons missing from dock and application switcher. Poked around and found the file/var/folders/w8/cwy82gy53_z4r3_xx2q08m3w0000gn/C/com.apple.dock.iconcache (your path may look different, use find on command line) was just 4k. Moved the file away and did 'killall Dock' and icons came back.
i do not see the white dots
You normally cannot see because ther my apps an there are the icons of my mac🙂
(In response to mikkelrb's solution regarding the /var/ folder)
Worked perfectly! The other solutions didn't work for me (the "mv" command or resetting the PRAM). What a relief!
Based on mikkelrb's solution, run this command in Terminal to fix the issue:
find /var/folders -name com.apple.dock.iconcache -exec rm {} \; 2>/dev/null; killall DockThis worked on my MID 2011 MAC MINI.
Thank you JMPC. You resolved it for me.
Hey!
Thanks, I'm happy to hear that.
I sdhoul also let you know that I had this problem, again, several weeks ago! It happened after I use 'Clean my Mac 2' software!! I had to perform what I suggested, again, to solve the problem. For some reason, 'Clean my Mac 2', messes with important files, that makes the icons vanish! Also, 'resetting' Lauchpad with Terminal, only messes with it: everything get's confused, so APPLE!!!! Please solve this urgently!!!!
All the best to you TheOtherSide2! :-)
Just hold the power button until the mac turns off. Hit the power button again and you will have your launchpad icons back
hi! can you send me the command and how i do?
thank you!
Hello Costas Economou,
Thank you for contacting me.
I presume your asking for the command with which you can reset the icons/Dock. If that's the case, here it is:
find /var/folders -name com.apple.dock.iconcache -exec rm {} \; 2>/dev/null; killall DockBe aware that after doing this, the Dock withh disappear for just a few seconds and then reappear again. Also be aware that the Lauchpad icons will reset too, so they will be on the deafult order and not the order on which you put them.
May I give you a last suggestion?
I found out, after much investigation on Google and discussion on Apple Forums, that most people who - like me - experienced this issue with their apps icons, were using a Mac on which the OS X was upgraded! Meaning that sometimes this issue occurs when you have had multiple OS X versions upgraded on you Mac.
In my case, this happened on my late 2010 MacBook! It came with OS X 10.6, but I upgraded it to 10.7, then 10.8 and finally, 10.9! Basically I only PERMANENTLY solved my problem after performing a Clean Instalation of the OS X!!! I completely erased my disc and installed OS X 10.9!
Also, I used to have 'Clean my Mac 2' installed! It kept erasing important files, that made the icons disappear! Uninstalling it, tends to solve this problem has well!
NOTE: Be advised that when this issue occurs, your Mac gets a lot slower!!! So it's not just a matter of 'invisible' icons: it affects the normal functioning of you computer!
Let me know if I can help you again!
Good Luck and All the best to you! :-)
If anyone has an mac cleaning app like 'Clean My Mac 2' or 'MacKeeper' you will find that this occurs after you have run an auto cleanup, be awhere that if you have not updated the app to the newest version and left it with the default OSX 10.8 version(s) this is most likely where your problem originates, after running an auto cleanup, immidiately shut down your computer by holding the power button, this will resolve your issue, you could also just avoid using the auto cleanup function. Hope this helped.
Quite right.
Though, by personal experiance, shutting down the Mac after using 'Clean my Mac 2' didn't exactly work for me. I also required to run Disc Utility, to help solve the problem.
But, in my case, performing a clean installation of OS X Mavericks, solved that issue permanently! :-)
BTW, I forgot to mention one last thing!
To use the command I sent you, you need copy it to Terminal.
Simply open Lauchpad (or your 'Applications' folder) and go to 'Utilities';
Select Terminal.
Paste the command and click 'ENTER' key on your keyboard!
Then you just need to close the Terminal window! :-)
