Worked for me. This just appeared and I came here and this was the first thing I tried. Thanks. Oh darn, it didn't fix the WiFi. Oh well.

If I may, I'd like to add an additional solution. I tried the other possibilities here and they did not work for me.
But I did have a stack of Microsoft Excel files one of my dock folders (specifically the downloads folder).
I took the files out and it solved the problem.
My guess is sometimes the disappearing icons happen when the Dock has trouble with some file times thus caves in.
